About me, Dr. Eric Robert Barrett

I first became interested in audiology during my freshman year of college at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, MI while taking an intro to communication disorders course (recommended to me by my dad). Audiology struck me as a great way to make a living by helping people with hearing loss stay connected to their family and friends. I mean, who wouldn’t want to shell out thousands of dollars to hear better?

After trudging my way through all of the undergraduate courses that mostly covered anything but audiology, I began my doctoral training at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. From the start I knew I was in the right place and the more I learned about audiology in the classroom and in the clinic the more I liked it. Go figure that there is much more to it than slapping a pair of hearing aids on someones ears and sending them on their way.

After graduating I was incredibly fortunate to be able to join the Starkey Hearing Foundation (SHF) and help bring the gift of hearing all over the globe. It was the opportunity of the lifetime and helped solidify and build upon all of the material from my degree. I learned that you didn’t need a fancy office full of high-tech equipment to help someone hear better, and all that is really required is a caring heart and patient mind. While with SHF I also supported the development of community-based hearing health care programs that now operate independently to serve their local areas. Smiling faces and beautiful places the world round!

Following my time with SHF I practiced in a variety of settings in the Twin City area including a retail hearing offices, hospital based hearing clinics, remote hearing care at nursing homes, and in patient’s private residences. After gaining more “traditional” experience I’ve been lucky enough to find my way back to Starkey and currently practice in the Center for Excellence at their global headquarters in Eden Prairie, MN. What I love most about our clinic is that we do the very best we can for every person that comes through the door to give them the best hearing possible. Perfect is expected, excellence is accepted.
