Staff Spotlight: Sheila Forward

While much of our impact at Accord happens on the front lines, the engine that keeps us running is powered by people like Sheila. Over the last two years, our organization has navigated significant transitions—administrative shifts and program closures that would have sidelined many.

Instead, Sheila stepped forward with a "headstrong" resolve. When our DSPs needed to ensure their payroll was seamless so that service delivery never wavered, Sheila was there. When a veteran biller retired after a decade of service, Sheila didn’t just fill a seat; she stepped up to the plate to master the intricate "ins and outs" of DS and ES programs.

Sheila, thank you for your resilience and for ensuring that "business as usual" means our community always comes first. You are the definition of the Accord mission in action.

At Accord’s Day Support Program, every day is shaped by the people we support.

Individuals choose activities that reflect their interests—whether that’s spending time in the Music Center or Art Room, or building confidence through Human Rights and Advocacy classes.

With person-centered support, people build skills, create meaningful connections, and take steps toward goals that matter to them as they live their greatest lives.

January can be a heavy month. Short days, long to-do lists, and the pressure to “reset” can take a toll. Mental Wellness Month is a reminder to slow down and check in with yourself and with others.

This month reminds us that mental health is just as important as physical health. Mental well-being isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about noticing when something feels off, giving yourself permission to rest, and knowing it’s okay to ask for support. Small moments of care can make a real difference.

Disability rights are human rights, and independence begins when people are supported to lead their own lives.

Disability rights are human rights, and independence begins when people are supported to lead their own lives.

January 23 marks the birthday of Ed Roberts, a disability rights leader whose life and work changed how society views disability and independence.

At 14, Roberts contracted polio, which paralyzed him from the neck down and required him to use an iron lung. When he applied to attend college, university administrators initially pushed back after learning about his disability. He persisted, becoming the first student with severe disabilities to attend the University of California, Berkeley. His experience helped lay the groundwork for the independent living movement.
