Victor had a goal in mind, finding meaningful work.

Along the way, he worked with Accord to explore opportunities, build confidence, and develop the skills that would help him succeed. With encouragement and support that focused on what mattered to him, Victor continued moving forward step by step.

Today, he’s working in a job that reflects his efforts and his goals. His journey is a reminder of what can happen when someone’s choices are heard, supported, and respected.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has proclaimed March 2024 DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH.

https://mn.gov/mnddc/news/pdf/Developmental-Disabilities-Awareness-Month-Signed-03-01-24.pdf

WHEREAS: 2024 marks the 54th anniversary of the United States Congress passing the Federal Developmental Disabilities and Bill of Rights Act (DD Act); and

WHEREAS: The DD Act defines developmental disabilities as a natural part of the human experience that do not diminish the right of individuals to live independently, exert control and choice over their own lives, and fully participate in and contribute to their communities. Those with developmental disabilities should benefit from the full integration and inclusion in the economic, political, social, cultural, and educational mainstream of society; and

WHEREAS: Approximately 1.58 percent of people in Minnesota have a developmental disability; and

WHEREAS: Individuals with developmental disabilities deserve opportunities to make informed decisions about their own lives, including resources, education, and a reliable framework of community members to offer support; and

WHEREAS: Individuals with developmental disabilities can make choices to live in homes and communities in which they can exercise their full rights, pursue meaningful and productive lives, have independent relationships, and contribute to their families, communities, state, and nation; and

WHEREAS: Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month fosters connection for individuals and families to share their experiences and knowledge with others; and

WHEREAS: It is crucial that individuals with developmental disabilities can live free of abuse, neglect, and violations of their legal and human rights. Our communities should be inclusive spaces that support and achieve full integration in an individualized manner, consistent with the unique strengths, resources, priorities, concerns, abilities, and capabilities of everyone.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM WALZ, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim March 2024 as DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH.
