July's Emotions Anonymous Recovery Tools —
7th Step: Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
7th Helpful Concept: Emotions Anonymous is a spiritual program, not a religious program. We do not advocate any particular belief system.
7th Tradition: Every EA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.
7th Slogan: By the grace of God.
7th Administrative Concept: Balance
The trustees have legal rights, while the rights of the membership are traditional.
Concept VII defines the balance of powers between the membership and the trustees. The trustees bear legal responsibility for EA’s funds, services, and actions. The membership is the conscience of EA with traditional rights. There need never be a clash or testing of these rights, the legal and the traditional, as long as the trustees and the membership work together in good faith.
7th Just For Today: I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests — hurry and indecision.
7th Principle: Humility.
7th Promise: Self-seeking slips away.

6th Step: Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
6th Tradition: An EA group ought never endorse, finance or lend the EA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.
6th Promise: We have less concern about self and gain interest in others.
6th Administrative Concept: Trusteeship/Authority/Responsibility
We acknowledge the primary administrative responsibility of the trustees.

The Board of Trustees is expected to spearhead the formulation of EA policy in accordance with EA principles and is accountable for its proper dissemination. To provide efficient and balanced leadership, the trustees must be chosen for their special talents, 12-Step experience, and sound judgment. Their great responsibility requires a large grant of authority. The trustees are the active guardians of our Twelve Traditions and are charged with upholding and applying these principles. As they administer the business prudently, there is no need to choose between good business and good EA practice, since there is no conflict between the two.
6th Slogan: Look for the good.
6th Just For Today: I will try to go out of my way to be kind to someone I meet. I will be considerate, talk low, and look as good as I can. I will not engage in unnecessary criticism or finding fault, nor try to improve or regulate anybody except myself.
6th Principle: Willingness
6th Helpful Concept: We never discuss religion, politics, national or international issues, or other belief systems or policies. EA has no opinion on outside issues.

May EA Recovery Tools
5th Step: Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
5th Tradition: Each group has but one primary purpose: to carry its message to the person who still suffers from emotional problems.
5th Promise: The feelings of uselessness and self-pity lessen.
5th Administrative Concept: Equality
The rights of appeal and petition protect minority views and assure that they are heard.

Consideration of others and courteous regard for the views of all is the basis of strength, unity, and cooperation. This Concept assures protection of the views of minorities and of the entire fellowship.

Through the Right of Appeal, minority views can be heard. Members with minority views have a duty to present a minority report to the membership when they believe that a wrong decision could seriously affect EA. When minorities speak out, they help preserve the fellowship. By compelling a thorough debate, they are a chief defense against uninformed, misinformed, hasty, or angry action.

The Right of Petition gives members the right to petition those in authority to consider an alternative that may differ from their point of view. The right of petition also allows a member or staff member to carry a complaint direct to the Board of Trustees without fear of reprisal.
5th Slogan: First things first.
5th Just For Today: I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out. If anyone knows of it, it will not count. I will do at least one thing I don't want to do, and I will perform some small act of love for my neighbor.
5th Promise: The feelings of uselessness and self-pity lessen.
5th Principle: Integrity
5th Helpful Concept: EA is not a sounding board for continually reviewing our miseries, but a way to learn to detach ourselves from them. Part of our serenity comes from being able to live at peace with unsolved problems.

Still Seeking Writers!

We are looking for writers for two specific topics: Love and Justice. Writing should be a personal story reflecting either of these subjects and around 1,200 words.

Or would you prefer to write a reflection? Reflections are much shorter – 150-250 words. We’re hoping to include 2-3 reflections on each topic, so we need a lot of submissions to make this new book happen! Topics for a reflection are the 12 EA Principles: Honesty, Hope, Faith, Courage, Integrity, Willingness, Humility, Love, Justice, Perseverance, Spirituality, and Service.

Send yours to director@emotionsanonymous.org and include which principle you are referencing. The more people who are involved in this, the stronger the new book will be!

We’re developing a new book that will focus on the 12 Principles and hope to have it published later this year. Would you be interested in writing a reflection for it? Reflections should be short – 150-250 words. Send yours to Elaine at Director@emotionsanonymous.org and include which principle you are referencing. The more reflections we receive the stronger the new book will be!

3rd Step: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
3rd Tradition: The only requirement for EA membership is a desire to become well emotionally.
3rd Principle: Faith
3rd Administrative Concept: Trust

The right of decision makes effective leadership possible.

Being allowed to make appropriate decisions, to act freely without being hassled or second-guessed, gives dignity to the person who is doing a job. This freedom to exercise judgment, and the trust which permits it, is the core of Concept III.

We trust our group leaders to decide when to handle group affairs and when to ask for guidance. We trust the Board of Trustees to decide when to act on its own responsibility and when to ask the membership for direction. We trust members of the EA staff in positions of responsibility to decide when to act wholly on their own and when to refer a problem to the next higher authority. It is our duty to carefully choose for every position those who will serve us and then trust them to do the job without interference or undue criticism.
3rd Slogan: One day at a time.
3rd Helpful Concept: We respect anonymity; no questions are asked. We aim for an atmosphere of love and acceptance. We do not care who you are or what you have done. You are welcome.
3rd Just For Today: I will try to adjust myself to what is and not force everything to adjust to my own desires. I will accept my family, my friends, my business, my circumstances as they come.
3rd Promise: We comprehend the word serenity, and we know peace of mind.

EA's 2nd Step: Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
EA's 2nd Tradition: For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority: a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.
EA's 2nd Administrative Concept: Representation Accountability
The EA groups have delegated complete administrative and operational authority to its elected representatives.
The fellowship of EA is guided and directed by the Board of Trustees and delegates to the annual convention. These representatives are chosen by the members, and they are accountable to the membership. The Board of Trustees is entrusted with the authority to make decisions for fellowship world services and to oversee operations at the International Service Center.
EA's 2nd Helpful Concept: We are experts only on our own stories, how we try to live the program, how the program works for us, and what EA has done for us. No one speaks for Emotions Anonymous as a whole.
EA's 2nd Principle: Hope
EA's 2nd Slogan: You are not alone.
EA's 2nd Just For Today: I will try to be happy, realizing my happiness does not depend on what others do or say or what happens around me. Happiness is a result of being at peace with myself.
EA's 2nd Promise: We do not regret the past or wish to shut the door on it.

January’s Tools for Recovery
Step 1: We admitted we were powerless over our emotions, that our lives had become unmanageable.
Tradition 1: Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends on EA unity.
Promise 1: We realize a new freedom and happiness.
Just For Today 1: I will try to live through this day only, not tackling all of my problems at once. I can do something at this moment that would discourage me if I had to continue it for a lifetime.
Helpful Concept 1: We come to EA to learn how to live a new way of life through the twelve-step program of Emotions Anonymous which consists of Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, concepts, the Serenity Prayer, slogans, Just for Todays, EA literature, weekly meetings, telephone and personal contacts, and living the program one day at a time. We do not come for another person — we come to help ourselves and to share our experiences, strength, and hope with others.
Slogan 1: Let go and let God.
Principle 1: Honesty

Step 12: Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Promise 12: We realize that God is doing for us what we could not do ourselves.
Just for Today 12: I choose to believe that I can live this one day.
Slogan 12: I have a choice.
Helpful Concept 12: Part of the beauty and wonder of the EA program is that at meetings we can say anything and know it stays there. Anything we hear at a meeting, on the telephone, or from another member is confidential and is not to be repeated to anyone—EA members, mates, families, relatives or friends.
Tradition 12: Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities
Principle 12: Service

What is Emotions Anonymous?

Emotions Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who desire to improve their emotional well-being. EA members come together in weekly meetings for the purpose of working toward recovery from any sort of emotional difficulties. EA members are of diverse ages, races, economic status, social and educational backgrounds. The only requirement for membership is a desire to become well emotionally.

Currently there are EA groups in more than 30 countries, with more than 600 active groups, including Skype and phone meetings. EA is nonprofessional; it can be a complement to mental health therapy but it is not professional help.

As an anonymous program, EA respects the confidentiality of its members at all times. Members are not required to share any personal details - or even last names - if they do not chose to at meetings. As a spiritual program, there is an emphasis on a Higher Power. Experience has shown the EA program works equally well for any religious affiliations and those without religious beliefs.

EA provides a warm and accepting group setting in which to share experiences without fear of criticism. Through weekly support meetings, members discover they are not alone in their struggles. We may each have different symptoms, but the underlying emotions are the same or similar.
