It is fairly typical that as the cold and darkness settle in, therapists get busier! Even so, I am keeping the kettle full and ready, to provide some extra warmth for my in person clients. ✨🫖☕️✨

What is healing for people in therapy isn’t that a therapist will have some all knowing answers to the problems of the world. The healing happens in the process. It is in the trusted connection, the safe place, and the vulnerability that growth happens. Most importantly, it happens in the relationship.

Relationship. This was such a key word for me in graduate school. What do social workers do? We do relationships. We connect and support. Relationships that are the grease on the gears of the systems we move through. As an outreach worker for homeless youth, part of my job was creating connections at other shelters and agencies. And now, as a therapist, I often describe my work as being grounded in relationship. I work to create an environment of care and respect for my clients. I also push myself to be open to feedback and to gently offer feedback to my clients, so that you can grow through reflection- and I can grow as a clinician.

This is not easy work, but it is so necessary. It is through this practice that we strengthen our ability to tolerate the distress that is required for relationship repair. In our culture, there is a major push toward individualism and away from interdependence which requires repair and staying connected through conflict. We too easily retreat to our corners, disengage, or write people off. Collectively we need to strengthen our relational repair muscles! 💪✨
