Fullerton Public Library installed a $35,000 book vending machine near the transit center, the hope is commuters will read during their journeys.

Fullerton Public Library's book vending machine has a 500-book capacity. It offers older paperback bestsellers and current hardcover bestsellers selections and will be restocked as needed. About a third to one-half of the device's inventory are donated. Only visible books will be available for checkout.

A library patron will need a valid FPL (Fullerton Public Library) card to access books at any time. The machine is fully integrated with the Main Library's checkout system. To begin, scan the library card at Step 1, enter the book number at Step 2, retrieve your receipt at Step 3 and then collect your book. (Books cannot be checked out if there are overdue fees.)

When you have conversations about what it means to be alive in the world, suddenly, you’re beginning to understand yourself better, and in understanding yourself better, you’re better able to communicate something about your future,” said Betts, who was incarcerated at 16.

The libraries are meant to provide beauty, access to literature and cultivate a community space in prisons nationwide.

One bundle of homemade camouflage netting was packaged with a note reading, "Death to enemies." The libraries are also sending Ukrainian books out of the country, to refugees who have fled.

One of Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden's favorite items in our Rare Book and Special Collections Division is Phillis Wheatley’s "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral." In 1773, Wheatley became the first African American woman to publish a book of poems.
