“Can pre-cum get you pregnant?”
This is one of the most common questions I get from adults and teens alike and the short answer is: maybe.
Pre-ejacuate (or pre-cum) is a fluid that exits the p***s during arousal but prior to ej*******on. It’s comprised of multiple fluids though primarily fluid from the Cowper’s gland. Its primary functions are to provide lubrication and neutralize the acidity of the urethra; because the urethra in the p***s transports both urine and semen, pre-ejaculate reduces the acidity left over by urine so that the s***m aren’t “killed” - fascinating, right?!
Pre-ejaculate does not contain s***m, but if a person has not urinated since their last ej*******on, some s***m might still be present in their urethra. In addition, it appears that a small percentage of people prematurely release s***m from their te**es prior to ej*******on and/or or**sm.
Planned Parenthood estimates that of couples who use Coitus Interruptus aka “The Withdrawal Method” (unprotected penetrative s*x in which the p***s is pulled out prior to ej*******on) as their primary method of birth control for one year, 1 in 5 will become pregnant.
It’s important to know that pre-ejaculate can also contain S*xually Transmitted Infections.
If you don’t want to get pregnant, it’s best to use a hormonal or barrier method of contraception.
