This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the courageous men and women who gave their lives in service to our country — and we are forever grateful!

In observance of this day, our office will be closed on Monday, May 26. We will reopen and resume normal business hours on Tuesday, May 27.

DID YOU KNOW? The smallest bone in the human body is housed in our middle ear called the Stapes. Followed by two other tiny bones, the Malleus and Incus. All together they are known as the ossicles.

Sound hits the eardrum sending vibrations through the malleus, incus, then stapes and passed into your inner ear. This is where those vibrations are turned into neural signals that get sent up to your brain.

When's the last time your hearing was checked? Elementary school?! Now is a great time to get a baseline just like you get your vision checked and your teeth checked.

Curious about what you'll do during a hearing evaluation?

1. We first take a look into your ears to make sure your eardrums look healthy and you don't have ear wax blockage or issues like an ear infection.

2. We step into our nice built-in booth to check your ability to hear really soft tones under special headphones. This is the part where you raise your hand or push a button for the beeps. It tells us if there are any tones you may be missing and at what severity it may be.

3. We use another headset like a headband that doesn't even go in your ear, using vibration for you to hear the beeps. This helps us rule out issues within your middle ear and checks the hearing center (inner ear) directly.

4. We also perform a word recognition test where you repeat random words in each ear. This helps us understand how you hear words without the use of lip reading.

5. There can be additional diagnostic tests performed if we see any findings that may point to something more than a typical hearing loss and may require physician intervention.

6. We have additional ways of checking your hearing beyond these initial levels. Whether it's testing your ability to hear in background noise or comparing your results with and without your hearing aids.

Personal Hearing Care customizes your evaluation based on information you provide on your primary concerns, self assessment questionnaire, and past medical history. We complete the evaluation by reviewing the results and discussing the next steps in your hearing care plan.
