What is a cortisone shot, anyway?

Cortisone--and other steroid medications--are the big guns of anti-inflammatories. Steroids like cortisone are different than ibuprofen or aspirin, which are “non-steroidal”. If inflammation is like a fire burning in the shoulder, irritating tissue and causing pain, then anti-inflammatories are the fire equipment to put out that fire. Taking an ibuprofen is like throwing a bucket of water on your house; a cortisone shot is the fire department showing up with a pumper truck.

Cortisone and other steroids are ten times more effective than over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen. Injecting the cortisone allows it to be targeted precisely, and using ultrasound to target the inflamed spot is even more accurate. That’s why Dr. Frisella performs ultrasound-guided cortisone injections. Ultrasound-guided injections put the strongest medication into the most precise spot for the best results.

Frisella Shoulder Surgery, part of Advanced Bone & Joint, will open a brand new, state-of-the-art building in St. Peters in the summer of 2022. The new 50,000 square foot building will feature cutting-edge office space with digital x-ray, ambulatory surgery center with 4 digital operating rooms, on-site physical therapy, MRI, and more. The open-plan building will allow you to wait in an atrium flooded with natural light. Look forward to seeing you there next summer!

The word "orthopedics" was coined in 1741 by French writer & physician Nicolas Andry de Bois-Regard. Andry explains it as "formed from two Greek words, “orthos” which means straight, devoid of deformity and “paidos” which means child. From these two words I formed that of Orthopaedics to express in one word what I have set out to do, namely to teach several ways of preventing and correcting deformities in children.” His book "L'Orthopedie" was translated into English in 1743.
