The Missouri History Museum is hosting a sensory-friendly morning on Aug. 19 from 10am-12pm. It is the last month to explore the interactive exhibit, where visitors can color on the walls. To avoid crowds, the museum will be closed to the public and registration is required.

Individuals on the autism spectrum and their companions are invited to join us for the 8/19 Sensory-Friendly Morning at the Missouri History Museum!

To ensure a positive experience for all attendees with autism, lighting and noise levels in and other spaces inside our building will be adjusted to create a more inclusive atmosphere to minimize sensory overload and provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Teen Club DSPs work with middle and high school students with developmental disabilities in this after-school program.

Tomorrow marks the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act! The ADA has been transforming lives and ensuring that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. While we have made great strides, there is still work to be done. We continue to strive for a world where accessibility and inclusion are universal.

It's that time of year again when we get excited to highlight the students participating in our Summer Work Experience (SWE) program. Every summer, Community Living's Employment Services team supports high school students ready to embark on their first job. The SWE program, funded through Vocational Rehabilitation, is a six-week opportunity for students to gain practical work experience while refining their soft skills.

The 2024 SWE crew will be wrapping up their work responsibilities at Schnucks this week and we are incredibly proud of their dedication and the progress they are making!

Meet Sara 😊

We are so grateful to have Sara as part of our team! Her kindness, energy, and dedication make a difference every day.

Starting as a Residential Staffing Coordinator, Sara quickly proved that her role was much more than just administrative work. She built strong relationships with our clients, becoming a trusted figure from the start. Now, as the Engagement and Intake Coordinator of Support Services for Adults (SSA), Sara helps guide families through the intake process, ensuring they feel confident and comfortable with their loved ones’ care.

“The days I get to be in our centers are my favorite days. Our SSA team and participants are my driving force. They are the glue that binds us!” Sara says.

These awesome rock painting kits were donated to the Young Adult Program by a parent 😊 The YAP crew had fun decorating them and hiding them around Veterans Tribute Park. Keep your eye out if you visit and you might just find one!

School is out and the sun is shining, which means our SOAR Summer Camp is already making a big splash! SOAR (Social Opportunities and Recreation) Summer Camp is a nine-week program that provides a full day of summer activities and field trips in a supportive environment. Trey is one of the campers who is excited to connect with friends this summer. “I look forward to going to fun places but mostly swimming! I look forward to having a fun time with my paras! They are nice and funny and kind and more!” Trey says.

Megan, Trey’s sister, works at SOAR and has been with Community Living for nearly eight years. She has a special bond with Trey and is proud to support him and other participants. “Trey is a true homebody, but when he is at camp, he flourishes into such a social butterfly! Our direct support staff in SOAR push Trey just enough to encourage him to get outside of his comfort zone and try new things,” Megan shares.

Community Living and United Way

The United Way of Greater St. Louis annual fall campaign provides stable funding throughout the year to 160+ local nonprofits like Community Living, Inc! Through our Safety Net partnership, we help create a strong foundation for our region, now and for generations to come. The more United Way raises, the more funding Community Living receives. Last year, Community Living employees alone donated over $11,500 and we were given over $200,000 in funds from United Way. These funds allow us to provide a “safety net” for our community by offering services for people with disabilities. We are proud to call ourselves a United Way-supported agency.
