A Clubhouse is organized to provide a restorative environment for people whose lives have been disrupted by mental illness. While participating in a Clubhouse our members gain access to personalized opportunities to rejoin the worlds of friendships, family, employment, and education.
We focus on three main avenues to re-engage people with their community: the work-ordered day, employment (Transitional & Supported), and evening, weekend, and holiday activities.
What is the Work-Ordered Day?
The daily operations of a Clubhouse are organized around a structured system known as the work-ordered day. The work-ordered day is an eight-hour period, typically Monday through Friday, which parallels typical business hours. Members and staff work side-by-side, as colleagues, to define the needs of the community. The daily work is structured into necessary tasks to meet the community’s need. As with any business, the phones must be answered; the attendance must be tracked; employment opportunities must be developed; lunch must be prepared; and the bathrooms must be cleaned. Tasks are never added as “busy work”, but as part of an identified need of the Clubhouse.
What is Transitional Employment?
Transitional Employment is a highly-structured program for members to return to work at local businesses. Transitional Employment placements are part-time (15-20 hours per week), at the employer’s place of business, and include a lot of on-the-job and off-site support from Clubhouse staff and other members. These placements generally last six to nine months in duration. Members can then try another placement or move on to more independent employment. In Transitional Employment job placements members earn at least minimum wage. The program is designed to help members gain confidence while working on enhancing employable skills on-the-job. The only requirement for a member to participate in Transitional Employment is the expressed desire to work.
What is Evening, Weekend, and Holiday?
In addition to work opportunities, Clubhouse provides evening, weekend, and holiday social and recreational programming. Clubhouse mirrors the rest of society by working during the work week and socializing in the evenings and on the weekends. Members and staff together organize structured and non-structured social activities, which are scheduled outside of the work-ordered day.
