Slowing down is not always easy, especially on the days we need it most. This is why having a variety of mindfulness tools available is so important. Some days, deep breathing feels out of reach. Other days, movement might not feel right either. And sometimes, our kiddos just need something new and attention grabbing to help get them started.
When that happens, we can turn to something simple and quiet. Something we already carry with us. Our hands!
Next time you need a new trick, try this: 👋 Look at the palm of your hand and slowly count every crease, line, and ridge. Take your time, making your way from one side of your hand to the other. Let your eyes follow the shapes. You can even imagine your hand is a forest floor and begin to trace your finger on the trail like a hiker moving along the path. Use your imagination to add whatever fun pieces you choose to your nature trail. Make this fun and enjoyable, like you're creating a tiny, little world in the palm of your very own hand. Breathe gently as you go.
How many lines or pathways can you find?
Does bending or wiggling your fingers add or remove more creases?
Is there something new on your hand or something you’ve just never noticed before?
What is the texture like? Is it the same everywhere or different in some spots?
These kinds of questions help focus the mind. They shift attention away from racing thoughts and bring it into the here and now. That is exactly what mindfulness is. It is the practice of noticing the present moment with curiosity and care.
When we slow down and pay attention, even for just a minute, we give our brains a chance to regulate, reset, and feel safe again. This is especially powerful for children. It helps build body awareness, emotional control, and the ability to self-soothe. All of that can begin with something as simple as looking at your own hand. Bonus points if you can make it fun🌟
