We know that choosing an OB/GYN is a significant decision that can impact your health and well-being. How do you go about finding the right one?
* Ask friends, family, or primary care physicians for recommendations. Get recommendations!
* Consider your needs. Determine whether you need an OB/GYN with a specific focus, such as high risk, pregnancy, infertility, or menopause management. Think about whether you prefer a male or female.
* Check their hospital affiliations. Consider the location of the practice and the office hours.
* Verify insurance coverage with the office you choose.
* Trust your instincts about whether you feel comfortable and confident in the care provided.

This year Women’s Care Specialists will be celebrating our Silver Jubilee- 25 years ago Dr Janet Matuszek started a private practice all on her own. Today, WCS is an all female OB/GYN practice composed of board-certified and award-winning physicians, Dr. Janet Matuszek and Dr. Megan Mohrman, as well as board-certified nurse practitioners, Julie Schweitzer, Angie Warner, and Marcy Haley.

WCS offers complete obstetrical and gynecological care for women from adolescence through menopause. The practice emphasizes preventative care and treatment. Routine medical services, such as cancer screenings and disease prevention are also available to help women of all ages to maintain optimal health for a lifetime. Our providers use the latest diagnostic equipment and treatment methods such as minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures.

WCS has two office locations, a phlebotomist on site, sonographers on staff, and evening appointment times available. We are affiliated with St Luke’s, Mercy, and Missouri Baptist Hospitals. We know we are incredibly lucky to have amazing women working at WCS who bring a wealth of skills and experience to our practice.

We thank all of you for the wonderful referrals of family and friends. We thank you for your trust and confidence in our practice.

July 10th Chronic Disease Day

National Chronic Disease Day is observed to raise awareness about chronic diseases and the impact they have on individuals, families, and our healthcare systems. Seven of the 10 leading causes of death in America are a chronic disease. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and respiratory diseases are among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. The United States has the highest obesity rate among high-income countries in the world.

As a community we want to promote healthier lifestyles to prevent the onset of chronic conditions. We need to advocate for better healthcare policies and support for people living with chronic diseases. We want to stress that regular health screenings can aid in early detection of chronic diseases. With behavior changes, appropriate medical management chronic diseases can often be prevented or managed effectively.

Prevention is key! Who or what motivates you to be your strongest, healthiest self?

Using sunscreen is crucial for protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation. Here are key times when you should apply sunscreen:

1. Use sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days, as UV rays can pe*****te clouds.

2. Apply sunscreen at least 15-30 minutes before going outside to give it time to absorb into your skin.

3. Use sunscreen when the sun's rays are strongest, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

4. Apply sunscreen before swimming and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.

5. Apply sunscreen when engaging in outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or playing sports.

6. Use sunscreen in high-altitude areas and snowy environments, as UV exposure increases with altitude and snow reflects UV rays.

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and don't forget to apply it to all exposed skin, including often-missed areas like the ears, back of the neck, and tops of the feet.

“Nothing looks better in your 50’s than SUNSCREEN in your 20’s”

In St Charles County and St. Louis County s*xually transmitted infections (STI‘s) continue to be a significant public health issue in 2023 and 2024.

In St. Louis County, the incidence of gonorrhea has shown fluctuations. Chlamydia and syphilis rates remain high, with syphilis, particularly concerning due to its increase among women and the consequent rise in congenital syphilis cases.

St Charles County also faces ongoing challenges with STI‘s. The local health department emphasizes regular testing as many infections can be asymptomatic.

Both counties are working to address these issues through increased access to testing, treatment, and prevention education. Efforts include promoting safe s*x practices, ensuring pregnant women receive necessary screenings, and targeting the disparities in infection rates among different demographic groups.

STIs spread during va**nal, oral, or a**l s*x or close intimate contact. Anyone can get an STI. People who have more than one s*xual partner, gay men, and bis*xual men are at the highest risk. You might not notice any symptoms. The only way to know for sure whether you do or don’t have an STI is to get tested.

The only definite way to prevent HIV or STI’s is to not have s*x at all. Safe s*x is protected s*x during every s*xual encounter. Use a condom- male or female, know how to use them. Use a dental dam.

Sexual health is health, and our providers can answer your questions and address your concerns. We offer routine STI screenings as well as potential exposure testing.

If your children are asking you should be providing the answer- An age appropriate answer every time.

Here are some key aspects they should know:

Understanding their own body, including proper names of anatomy, bodily functions, and changes during puberty. Knowledge about periods, breast development, voice changes, hair growth and hormonal changes is important.

Starting at a young age learning the importance of a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is detrimental to lifelong habits. Regular physical activity to maintain a healthy weight, build strong bones, and boost mental health.

Good hygiene practices, including dental care, skincare, and regular bathing, to prevent infections and maintain overall health.

Your children should understand that regular checkups with healthcare providers, vaccinations, and age appropriate screenings are necessary to keep them healthy- to prevent them from getting sick or having serious issues. You need to teach them their family medical history, as well as their personal history, and potential hereditary conditions.

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for physical and mental health. Establishing a regular sleep routine is just as important in the teen years as it is in the toddler years. Understanding the impact of screen time on quality of sleep and overall health is another important topic.

Talk to your children to build a positive body image and self-esteem. Make them aware that media portrayal of beauty are often unrealistic. Beauty, health, and confidence come in all shapes and sizes.

Encourage open discussions about feelings and promoting coping techniques for frustration, stress, anger, and depression.

It’s good to know basic first aid skills and when and how to seek medical help in emergencies. Can your little ones call 911?

Information about safe s*x practices, consent, s*xually transmitted infections (STIs), and contraception. Understanding their rights and the importance of respectful relationships.

Discuss the risks associated with to***co, alcohol, and drugs. Also discuss strategies to resist peer pressure and the impact of substance abuse on health and future opportunities.

Open, ongoing conversations and access to age appropriate reliable information can help our children make informed decisions about their health and feel confident in seeking help when needed.

Did you know ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) recommends that girls should visit an OB-GYN for the first time when they are between the ages of 13 and 15? This first visit is to get them familiar with a trusted professional and our providers will go over several of the key aspects listed here.

Juneteenth, June 19th, is a monumental date for African American communities in the United States, marking the end of slavery back in 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was announced in 1863, it took more than two years and the continuation of the Civil War before slavery officially ended in all Confederate states on June 19, 1865

“Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory, or an acceptance of the way things are. It’s a celebration of progress. It’s an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible and there is still so much work to do.” ~Barack Obama 💚🤎❤️

06/12/2024

Sometimes it’s hard to ‘know’ if you’re truly in labor. There are a combination of physical signs and symptoms that may clue you in to knowing it’s go-time. These can include:

*Contractions become more regular, intense, and closer together. Unlike Braxton Hicks contractions, true labor contractions do not go away with rest or hydration.

*Your water breaks. The rupture of the amniotic sac, which can be a large gush of fluid or a slow trickle.

*You may have a ‘bloody show’. A small amount of blood-tinged mucus, which is a sign that the cervix is beginning to dilate.

*Persistent lower back pain or pressure that doesn’t go away.

*A feeling of increased pressure in the pelvis as the baby moves down into the birth ca**l.

*Some women experience gastrointestinal symptoms, diarrhea or nausea, as the body prepares for labor.

It's important for you to discuss labor signs with your healthcare provider and know when to contact them or go to the hospital.

A tan is the body’s response to injury from UV rays. There is no such thing as a healthy tan.

* 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

* You can get sunburned on a cloudy day. Protection is necessary for your skin outdoors year round.

* Anyone can get skin cancer regardless of skin color.

* Sun exposure is not the only way to get vitamin D. A healthy diet of foods that are naturally rich in vitamin D, or fortified, and/or vitamin D supplements.

* Shade can help shield you from harmful UV rays. If you can’t find shade create your own with a hat, umbrella, canopy, or hood of a stroller for a child.

* A base tan does not protect your skin. Every time you tan you increase your risk of developing a sunburn, skin cancer, and premature skin aging.

* Sunscreen will wear off over time. To stay protected reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days, after swimming, sweating, and toweling off. Set a timer if necessary.

* When caught early skin cancer, including Melanoma, is highly treatable. Learn how to detect skin cancer early.

* Know your risks- are there members of your family that have had skin cancers - see your dermatologist as directed.

There are five general types of birth control. They vary in the length of protection they offer and the frequency of use. While birth control is considered generally safe some types may cause menstrual irregularities, possible fertility delays, and other hormonal risks. Virtually all women can find a type of birth control that works for them.

As you know, birth control effectiveness is key to how it is used. Perfect Use of birth control method is when it is used correctly Every Single Time. Typical Use on the other hand, refers to how most people use a given birth control method, such as forgetting a dose or not using the barrier product from the very beginning.

* Female Sterilization is permanent and are more than 99% effective. Male Sterilization isn’t always reversible.
*LARC (Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives) are more than 99% effective
*Short-Acting Hormonal Contraceptives are 91-94% effective
*Barrier Methods are 71-86% effective with typical use
*Natural Family methods are the least effective at 75-78%

LARC methods are typically a good option right after having a baby. Per ACOG, “During the first year of use, fewer than one in 100 women with an IUD or implant get pregnant. For comparison, nine in 100 women get pregnant in the first year of using the birth control pill, and 18 in 100 women get pregnant in the first year using the male condom.”

Birth Control is a personal choice and our providers will be happy to discuss your options based on your medical history, personal wants & needs, and lifestyle.

What happens during a pelvic exam?

We will have you undress from the waist down and give you a sheet to cover with. You will lie down on the exam table, scoot to the very end, and put your feet into foot rests that we call stirrups. First your provider will look at your external ge****ls to examine the v***a. Then your provider will use a speculum, a heated speculum, inserted into your va**na . The speculum keeps the walls of your va**na open during the exam, so that the walls of the va**na and the cervix can be examined. A Pap smear or a test for HPV will be performed at this time if warranted. Finally, your provider will check your internal organs with a gloved hand, while the other hand presses on your abdomen from the outside. This helps your provider feel your internal organs, including your uterus and ovaries. There are times where a re**al va**nal exam is warranted. This exam may be done to check for cancer or other health problems.

The benefits of a routine pelvic exam include-
* early detection of treatable conditions, such as infections or cancer
* changes to the skin in your pelvic area
* reassurance about your s*xual and reproductive health and a better understanding of your body

It is normal to feel a little nervous about having a pelvic exam- even if you’ve had one before. There may be minor discomfort, but it should not be painful. Making sure your body is as relaxed as possible will help ease any discomfort.

We understand that pelvic exams can be triggering or painful for survivors of s*xual abuse, if this is a concern for you, let us know prior to your exam. There are steps that we can do that will make the pelvic exam a little bit easier.

It is important for you to take care of yourself, if you haven’t already….make your appointment today!

A yeast infection is no fun and can certainly ruin a vacation. Yeast infections are very common in summer since we spend more time in wet bathing suits at the pool, lake, and beach. Yeast thrives in warm, dark, wet environments. Perfumed tampons can cause yeast infections since they alter the bacteria in your va**na.

Symptoms of yeast infections typically include itching of the l***a, pain/burning when urinating, redness and irritation of the l***a and v***a, and white, clumpy, cottage cheese-like discharge.

To avoid getting a yeast infection, change out of the wet swimsuit when you are done swimming. (A good idea to bring a second pair of bottoms with you.) Shower to remove chemicals that may irritate your skin. During times of increased exposure to wet environments taking a daily probiotic will help your body boost the “good” va**nal bacteria that will help keep the yeast growth down.

As always, if you are concerned that you are developing a yeast infection call our office for an appointment where you will be diagnosed and the proper treatment prescribed. 636.936.8777

🦩We all need to strive to be more confident in our own skin. 🦚

Living with negative self talk can seriously affect self-esteem and mental health. Everyone of us is unique with imperfections. Sure, there will always be someone you may look at with envy, but when you’re comfortable in your own skin, you realize that there’s no need to compare. You learn to stop judging others as well. When you are hyper critical of yourself, you are hyper critical of others. Knowing that no one is perfect allows you to have more compassion for the imperfections, even your own.

Make a list of things you need to do to take care of yourself and then schedule them into your day. Working out should be working towards a healthier body and not necessarily a skinny one. Being confident in your own skin is wearing what you want, speaking up for your beliefs, and staying true to yourself. Being confident in your own skin is not caring what others think.

Being confident in your own skin may be one of the benefits that comes with age. With age, you tend to let go of what others think. You’re never too young to start. You’ve got one body - be thankful for all it can do. Remember life is good if you’ve got your health.

The power to be beautiful comes from deep inside of you. Let your beauty shine! 🦩💫 🦚
