Here’s what I wish more families were told about AAC:
It’s not about their child putting in the work and effort. It’s about the support behind it.
Children don’t just start using AAC independently—they learn through connection, modeling, and consistent exposure.
Yesterday, I watched a mom confidently use her child’s device—navigating it, modeling language, and giving her daughter the time and space to respond. She went on to tell me how amazed she is by her progress and how much she’s using the device to communicate.
That kind of progress doesn’t happen by chance. It happens when caregivers take the time to learn, to put in the work, and to trust the process.
To the parents putting in that work every day—
learning the system, modeling words, and creating opportunities for communication…It matters more than you know. You are such an important part of your child’s voice.
