Believe it or not, your gut and hormones are intricately connected through a complex network known as the gut-endocrine axis! This relationship plays a crucial role in maintaining your health and well-being.

It all starts with the microbiome… 🦠

The gut microbiome, composed of trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms, plays a vital role in digesting food, synthesizing vitamins, and regulating the immune system. It also significantly influences hormone production and regulation:

👉 Estrogen
Gut bacteria are involved in the enterohepatic circulation of estrogen. They produce enzymes like beta-glucuronidase, which can deconjugate estrogen, allowing it to be reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Dysbiosis (imbalance in gut bacteria) can disrupt this process, leading to estrogen dominance or deficiency.

👉 Cortisol
The gut microbiome influences the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which controls the stress hormone cortisol. An unhealthy gut can contribute to chronic stress responses and elevated cortisol levels.

👉 Thyroid Hormones
Gut health affects the conversion of inactive thyroid hormone (T4) to active thyroid hormone (T3). An imbalanced microbiome can impair this conversion, impacting metabolism and energy levels.

But it doesn’t stop there!

The gut lining serves as a barrier that controls what enters the bloodstream from the digestive tract. When this barrier is compromised, it leads to increased intestinal permeability, also known as “leaky gut.” A leaky gut allows pathogens to enter the bloodstream. This includes:

🙅‍♀️ Toxins
🙅‍♀️ Undigested food particles
🙅‍♀️ And other nasties

This triggers an immune response and chronic inflammation which can lead to insulin resistance which impacts blood sugar levels, and also affects the hormones leptin and ghrelin which regulate appetite and satiety, potentially leading to weight gain and obesity. It’s clear that maintaining your gut health is one of the best ways to help regulate your hormones!
