Your OB/GYN (probably) isn’t the best person to prescribe and manage your HRT.
I'm Jillian Warwick and I'm a certified midlife specialist and functional medicine practitioner with over a decade of experience supporting my clients in optimizing their whole body health using functional lab testing, targeted supplementation, customized nutrition, and extensive education paired with strategies that actually work.
This is the first of a series I'm calling What I Wish Every Woman Over 40 Knew...
Before you jump to any conclusions about my perspective on OB/GYNs in women's healthcare...
Hear me out.
There’s no question that our OB/GYNs are essential in women’s healthcare, and many have walked women through some of the most vulnerable and life-changing moments of their lives…
❌ …but that does NOT automatically make them the best person to optimize hormones in midlife.
The reality is, the majority of OB/GYNs receive very little formal education on menopause and hormone optimization within the conventional system.
Just a couple of stats that help to explain A LOT about the quality of HRT care women are receiving:
📉 A 2019 survey published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that only 6.8% of trainees felt adequately prepared to manage menopause.
📉 Only 31.3% of OB/GYN residency programs reported having a formal menopause curriculum in a 2023 national survey of residency program directors.
Meanwhile, so many women in midlife are still struggling with crushing fatigue, brain fog, low libido, anxiety, sleep disruption, and weight gain that suddenly feels impossible to stop or reverse. I see it every. single. day. in my clinical practice. They come to me fed up with their symptoms, but at a loss for who to turn to for the support and care they deserve.
They’ve been told:
🩺 “Your labs are normal.”
🩺 “Welcome to aging.”
🩺 “Maybe try an antidepressant.”
And for those women who actually get an Rx for hormones, it’s usually with minimal testing (if any), zero personalization (via form, dosing, regimen), and, more often than not, a complete disregard for the other critical factors that influence their health like blood sugar, inflammation, sleep, stress, muscle mass, nutrition, or nervous system health.
Just because a provider CAN prescribe doesn’t mean they are qualified to or should. A prescription pad does NOT = proficiency.
⁉️ Why does this matter?
Because hormones don’t “work” in isolation.
☝️ This is exactly why I do what I do. I help women understand the FULL picture through comprehensive testing, symptom analysis, education, and strategy… and I connect them with trusted providers who specialize in prescribing and managing HRT.
