Adam is a 24-year-old corrections officer who is loved by his family, friends, and community. One day, when Adam didn’t report to work, a family friend and coworker went to check on him and found him unresponsive.

Adam had experienced cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated. He suffered from life-threatening diabetic ketoacidosis and multiple other concerns, including recurring seizures, acute hypoxic respiratory failure, septic shock, aspiration pneumonia, and acute kidney injury. His family was told to “say goodbye” and that he had about a 5% chance of survival. Adam underwent tracheostomy and feeding-tube placement before being transferred to Kindred Hospital Bay Area – St. Petersburg for continuation of care.

At Kindred, Adam was placed on Total Parenteral Nutrition, the intravenous administration of nutrients, to immediately address his malnutrition. He was treated for diabetes-associated gastroparesis – stomach paralysis – with a diet of soft, easy-to-digest foods. Eventually, the tube feeds were stopped as he tolerated an oral diet. As he improved, his tracheostomy tube was removed and his dialysis discontinued. Adam was able to start rehab treatment, consisting of physical therapy, occupational therapy, rehab nursing, and speech therapy. His care was overseen by physicians specializing in internal medicine and physiatry.

While he was in the hospital, Adam’s dad and sister never left his side. His mother, his other sister, and his friends were also very involved. Adam is a proud father of two beautiful girls and has a spunky Jack Russell Terrier named Rico Suave. After receiving treatment at Kindred, he was discharged home.

Adam tells his family and friends that he feels like he’s a “miracle” and lucky to be alive.

Thank you, Adam, for entrusting us with your care and supporting your amazing recovery!

Jenny, who is diabetic, was admitted to Trinity Hospital’s ICU in an altered mental state and was found to be in diabetic ketoacidosis – a serious emergency that occurs when the body produces too little insulin. While in the hospital, she was diagnosed with pneumonia, which caused respiratory failure, requiring intubation and placement on a ventilator.

Jenny also required a feeding tube, and while she could open her eyes, she couldn’t respond when spoken to. Doctors believed she may have had a stroke. Jenny was transferred to Kindred Hospital Bay Area – St. Petersburg on Jan. 19, 2026 and began her recovery under the care of a team of physicians, including her primary care doctor and specialists in neurology, pulmonology, wound care, cardiology, infectious disease, gastroenterology, and psychiatry. In addition, Kindred’s pharmacists and dietitian managed IV fluids and tube feeding for Jenny, and she regained strength and independence through respiratory therapy and physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

After 49 days at Kindred, Jenny discharged to her home with home health to continue her recovery. She is reunited with her family and two cats, and she’s back listening to her favorite 80s music, singing along now that she has her voice back.

“I have exceeded all of my therapy goals," Jenny said, "and I am excited to go back home."
