“This is the point in our story when the eye-rolling starts. Yes, my kid is gifted. Am I bragging? No. Do I think he’s more special than other kids? No. Do I even like the word gifted? Not particularly.

Giftedness is nothing to be proud of — and it’s nothing we caused. It just means my son is wired differently. It’s an inherent trait, a special need actually, that comes with a whole host of worries.”

The gifted-kid journey is a lonely one filled with guilt and worry.

Excited to attend tonight’s SENGinar on promoting the social/emotional health of gifted adults. I started my private practice with the intention of working with gifted children and was surprised when it morphed into a fairly even split between kiddos and adults but I have absolutely LOVED my work with the “grown-ups”. 😉

It's no real surprise to note that our students are feeling the stress and anxiety of this global pandemic as much if not more than their parents and teachers. The question is, are we checking in with them as much as we clearly should be, and offering them support and reassurance?

More than half of California students surveyed after campuses closed said they need mental health services.

I just finished watching this awesome webinar from SENG - Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted and I was so excited to share with you all. I was unable to attend the livestream on Monday but SENG has made the video of the event available for free for a limited time on their Vimeo channel. Go here to watch and learn about more ways we can help our gifted youth in this time of great uncertainty: https://vimeo.com/410207654

Kudos to SENG, by the way, for their swift and stellar efforts on behalf of the gifted during the COVID-19 pandemic. It helps so much when the unique needs of our community are recognized and addressed.

Where do you fall on the Oxford comma debate? Here's an interesting story about one verrry important (and expensive) comma!

This settles the Oxford comma debate! Except...it goes against AP style. Here's an overview of how the serial comma works and why it's important for clarity.

Is this feeling a bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water, or is it just me? Yes, there are severe problems with equal access and segregation by race and class within NYC public schools (and many other school districts, for that matter). But is it solving anything to completely eliminate gifted programming? Or is there perhaps a better way to ensure that ALL gifted students are having their needs met? May I suggest, for instance, universal screening and in-school gifted programs to start?? This problem did not happen overnight, a solution will likewise take some time to build.

A group appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio proposed seismic changes to the nation’s largest school system.
