Autism is increasingly being explored through a neuroinflammation lens. When the brain gets “stuck” in inflammation, often involving glial cells (the nervous system’s support cells), a child may look like they’re fighting an invisible battle: sleep changes, mood shifts, sensory overwhelm, regulation struggles, language delays, and challenges with focus and daily function.

So what does the research show about umbilical cord blood (UCB) therapy?

One of the best-known studies followed 25 children ages 4–6 who received a single IV infusion of their own (autologous) umbilical cord blood. The infusion was reported to be safe, and many participants showed measurable behavioral and developmental gains, especially children with higher nonverbal IQ scores.

In addition, multiple university-led studies, including research conducted at Duke University Medical Center, have reported a favorable safety profile and statistically significant improvements in some children with autism.

Across studies evaluating UCB therapy, reported improvements include:
✅ Visual & emotional responsiveness
✅ Intellectual engagement
✅ Motor function & body use
✅ Adaptation to change (flexibility)
✅ Anxiety & fear responses
✅ Nonverbal communication
✅ Activity levels

Important note: outcomes are not guaranteed. In published research/clinical reporting, about 65–70% of children respond positively, while around 30% do not show measurable benefit. Researchers are still learning why responses vary and which factors best predict results.
