✨Raising the Bar on Care.

We're proud to announce our 200th WATCHMAN procedure performed by our award-winning heart care team. The WATCHMAN implant device reduces the risk of stroke in patients who have atrial fibrillation, or AFib.

❗Northside Hospital is one of ONLY four in Pinellas County with the highly specialized team and technology to perform this minimally invasive surgical procedure.

❣️AFib causes irregular and often rapid heartbeat and is the most common heart rhythym disorder among adults in the U.S.

❣️Today is a special day for us. It's the day Joe Thielmann volunteers. Joe drives from Lakeland to St. Petersburg in honor of his dad. In 1976, Jack Thielmann became the first ever volunteer at our hospital. His son likes to say his dad was sitting out in the field and we built the place around him 🥰

Jack is gone, but every year to celebrate his birthday, Joe comes to 'pick up his shift.' People like Joe and Jack mean everything.

✨Today, we have 35 volunteers who give their time to support our care teams. From welcoming people into our lobby to assisting with ER check-in and providing answers to families in the waiting room, we could not do it without them.

If you'd like to volunteer, email Stephanie McDonald at stephanie.mcdonald2@hcahealthcare.com.

"Summer should be about making memories, not medical emergencies,” said Dr. Jason Grabert, emergency room medical director at HCA Florida Citrus Hospital. “By staying informed and taking a few simple precautions, you can safely enjoy all that our community has to offer.”

Whether you are boating, hiking, or grilling with family and friends, a few smart choices can help you avoid medical emergencies.
Dr. Jason Grabert shares tips on how to stay safe in the heat, on the trails, and in the water: https://bit.ly/4kNOKDs.

1️⃣Doctors are working with other departments to make an accurate diagnosis.
2️⃣You may need scans like a CT, X-ray or MRI.
3️⃣You may need bloodwork, and some lab tests take longer to get results.
4️⃣You may need to see a specialist, such as a heart doctor or orthopedic expert.

You will always leave with care instructions, any necessary prescriptions and a phone number to call if you have questions, as well as a way to make an appointment at a doctor's office.

Meet Jessica. She’s a cancer survivor and her daughter has Type 1 diabetes. They’re among millions of Americans who are about to face a major increase in health insurance costs.

Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) are currently helping 24 million people – including our patients – afford high-quality healthcare coverage through the insurance Marketplace (https://bit.ly/3GPsScM). Americans who purchase insurance on their own and rely on the tax credit are now facing skyrocketing costs if Congress allows the credit to expire at the end of 2025, putting at risk the health of children like Jessica’s daughter.

“We were living a perfectly normal life, and we suddenly had a child that had a chronic illness,” said Jessica. “We’re not wealthy. Money can get tight…we need Congress to take action now. It’s vital for us.”

One in eight people, and one in six children, in North Florida live in households that may be food insecure, which means not having enough nutritious food to have an active, healthy life.

At HCA Florida Healthcare we care committed to to fighting food insecurity. Recently, HCA Florida Capital Hospital presented a $15,000 donation to Second Harvest of the Big Bend to help provide food to families experiencing hunger, bringing the total to $23,000 since 2023.

The financial support is part of a broader effort that has included more than 250 colleagues from HCA Florida Healthcare volunteering at the Second Harvest of the Big Bend over the past two years to help sort and pack food donations.

“We’re honored to support Second Harvest with a financial gift, as well as the service of our dedicated volunteers throughout the year,” said Dale Neely, chief executive officer, HCA Florida Capital Hospital.

At HCA Florida Healthcare, we commit every day to creating healthier tomorrows — dedicating our time, expertise and resources to help others. Learn more about HCA Florida Healthcare's dedication to meeting the needs of our communities: https://bit.ly/44U3xGN.

- Repetitive vomiting
- No urination or wet diapers
- Lethargy or unusual drowsiness

- Swelling in the face, lips, or throat

A lifesaving story of excellence in action.

This month, we recognized our nurse Liz Perez, RN, as a patient safety hero. Because of her expertise and extensive experience in nursing, Liz was able to save the life of her patient, Laudelina - 'Landy' to those who love her.

Landy was in the hospital for observation, but Liz noticed something more serious. The EKG didn't seem right. Test results were concerning. So, Liz immediately activated a STEMI alert - the code for a heart attack. The alert sets off a series of actions by staff and physicians to immediately come to the patient.

Landy's granddaughter wrote us and said, "She was an absolute angel for my grandmother and all of us. The truth is, my grandmother is still with us today because of the way she reacted. In that terrifying moment she was so quick, so brave and so proactive that what could have been a tragedy turned into a miracle."

Landy went into emergency surgery to repair her heart and was in the hands of our cardiovascular surgical team, recognized as being in the Top 10% in the country for critical care and awarded 5-star heart care.

Landy is recovering well and her family says they'll never forget what their nurse did for them that day. "Liz is an example of pure care for the patients, empathy and love for what she does." - Landy's family.

Expert care matters, especially when it's the difference between life or death. Don't take our word for it. Here's what one patient had to say:

"I came into the hospital thinking that I was extremely overheated, but it turned out that I had a heart attack. From the time I came in until the time I left, the doctors and nurses took extremely good care of me and kept me informed every step of the way. I could not be more grateful of the care that I received from everyone involved with me. While I do have a long road to complete recovery, I have a really good chance to live a lot longer than the day that I came into the hospital. I would absolutely like to thank everyone for the fine care that I received at Northside."

We are in the top 10% in the country for critical care and are a 5-star recipient in heart care procedures for coronary intervention, heart failure, pacemaker and carotid surgery. That is expertise.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the arms or legs. It’s easy to mistake PAD for other conditions like hip arthritis or spinal stenosis, which means often goes undiagnosed. Many people with PAD don’t experience symptoms at all. That’s why awareness of risk factors – such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking – is crucial for screening.

Understanding the early warning signs is the first step toward timely intervention and better quality of life. In most cases, lifestyle changes, exercise and medications are enough to slow the progression or even reverse the symptoms of PAD, so talk to your doctor if you think you may be at risk.

Small businesses play an important role as job creators and are a pillar in communities nationwide. More than 4 million small business owners purchase healthcare coverage on their own and rely on Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) to keep premiums affordable.

But unless Congress acts soon, these tax credits will expire at the end of 2025. Many small businesses may face increased costs or be forced to reduce or eliminate employee health coverage.
