🦠 RSV Season Update for Families

We’re seeing an increase in RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) in our community, and we want families to be informed and prepared.

What is RSV?
RSV is a very common respiratory virus. For many children it looks like a cold, but it can cause more serious breathing problems in infants, young toddlers, and children with certain medical conditions.

Common symptoms include:
• Runny nose and congestion
• Cough
• Fever
• Decreased appetite
• Wheezing or fast breathing

When should you call us or seek care urgently?
Please contact our office or seek urgent care if your child has:
• Trouble breathing (fast breathing, chest pulling in, flaring nostrils)
• Poor feeding or fewer wet diapers
• Lethargy or difficulty waking
• Bluish lips or face
• Symptoms that are worsening instead of improving

How can families help reduce spread?
• Wash hands often
• Keep sick children home when possible
• Avoid close contact with infants if you’re ill
• Clean frequently touched surfaces
• Stay up to date on recommended vaccines, including flu and COVID

For many children, RSV is mild and improves with supportive care at home. If you’re unsure whether your child needs to be seen, please call us—we’re always happy to help guide you. We also have after hours nurses who can talk you through things if you’re unsure.

Thank you for helping keep our community’s kids healthy. 💙

We know many families may be feeling confused after yesterday’s changes to the CDC vaccine schedule. We want you to hear directly from us.

As your pediatric care team, we will continue to recommend all routine childhood vaccines according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) immunization schedule, which is supported by decades of research and endorsed by pediatricians and major medical organizations across the country.

Vaccines remain one of the safest and most effective ways to protect children from serious, preventable diseases. Our recommendations are guided by the best available scientific evidence and by our commitment to keeping your children healthy.

We understand that changes like this can raise questions or concerns. Please know that we are always happy to talk, listen, and answer questions—no matter how big or small. Your child’s health and your trust mean everything to us.

💙 Please don’t hesitate to reach out or ask to discuss vaccines at your next visit.

🦠🦠 Flu cases are surging in Missouri, doubling in only a week’s time. The best protection from serious illness and hospitalization is the yearly flu shot - come get your child’s flu shot today! 💉

Missourians should take extra steps to stay healthy as flu season continues to worsen. Since the beginning of October, DHSS has recorded 9,255 laboratory-confirmed influenza (flu) cases and 558 flu-related hospitalizations statewide. 4,589 of those cases occurred in one week.

The flu can lead to serious health outcomes. Vulnerable populations can have severe complications, but anybody can get very sick from the flu.

The best defense against the flu is a yearly flu shot. DHSS recommends that everyone aged six months and older receive a flu shot as soon as possible. It is not too late to start protecting yourself and others! Vaccination reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications, especially for high-risk groups such as seniors, young children and individuals with chronic health conditions.

🧼 Wash your hands often and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
🤧 Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow, not with your hands
🤒 Stay home if you are sick, especially if you have a fever
🦠 Avoid touching your face to stop germs from spreading
🧽 Disinfect any surfaces where germs could live

Flu shots are available for free or for a low cost. Contact your local public health agency or local pharmacy to find a flu shot near you.
