Well it’s almost May so this post is a bit overdue!

I have been wanting to introduce my new student, Nicole. She joined me in January and has been attending births and appointments with me. She’s been a fast learner and has fit right in to my practice! Sadly, she’s only here through the summer as she’ll be retuning back to Sierra Leone. But I expect to have her join me again the next 1.5-2 years. I’m just sad she can’t stay longer.

Here is her introduction in her own words:

“I’m Nicole Burch! First I’m a wife and a mom to 3 girls! I grew up in the Willamette Valley but live in Sierra Leone, West Africa with my husband and kids as missionaries. After having my first baby in a birth center I fell in love with midwifery and birth, but it just wasn’t the right time to start studying until the last couple years. I’ve been studying midwifery for the last year and a half and traveled back to the states in January to apprentice for 6 or so months with Lennon. In my spare time I enjoy going on walks, hanging with my family, cooking, and playing board games.”

Renewing my neonatal resuscitation certification today with a small group of awesome midwives. 🙌

Every two years we take this class so that we can be ready to help any babies who might need some help. This looks a lot different at home than in the hospital and we are lucky today to have a teacher that specializes in out of hospital birth resuscitation.

2024 was my busiest birth year ever. After crunching the numbers, I wanted to share some of the fun stats. I even attended an additional 9 births not included here, assisting other midwives.

In so many ways, 2024 was a year of abundant blessings and growth. I’m looking forward to seeing what 2025 holds!

Thank you to all the families who have given me the honor of walking alongside them while they welcome their new babies. What matters more than where your baby is born is that you feel heard and supported during the process, and my goal is that every family I serve feels this from me.

After four years of study including over 1300 hours of training, I’m pleased to announce that I graduated from homeopathy school last month and am now a Certified Professional Homeopath (CPHom).

What does this mean for my practice as a midwife? Not much will change. I work both with families who love and use homeopathy, and some who aren’t interested in using it, and that’s ok. I have started a small practice seeing homeopathy clients unrelated to my midwifery practice and would love to help if you are sick and want to use homeopathy. Check out my website and click the homeopathy tab. Space is limited.

In the new year I plan to teach some local classes on home use of homeopathy, to empower families to use this amazing modality themselves and help dispel the misinformation around homeopathy. (If you know of a great free or low-cost venue for such a class, let me know!)

45 sweet babies whose pregnancies and births I’ve had the honor of being a part of in 2024. 45 amazing families that have let me be part of their journey with their new baby. I am thankful. And also wondering if I’ll add another 1-2 hearts to the wall before 2024 is over. Perhaps!

Final visits are bittersweet. I love getting to walk this short time with families during their pregnancies, births and postpartums. The final ‘break-up’ visit is always hard for me. I’m thankful that I get to stay in touch with some of them and always make sure everyone knows I love baby photos, and to text me some cuteness anytime. 🥰

I saw this gorgeous field of echinacea in the Mt Angel area today while driving around the valley to see some families. I had to pull over and take a photo!

“what drives the medical approach is the belief that the physiologic process is prone to failure, and the clinician’s role is to proactively intervene to prevent those failures.”

Do you know that active management of the third stage is the norm in hospitals? Most women don’t even realize all that happens after they push out their baby. A lot is done to them without their consent.

This is a great article for both women and midwives to read!

Widely practiced, a critical look at the evidence for active management of 3rd stage finds no meaningful benefit and considerable harm.
