Dear Providence Health Plan,

We received payment from you for services we provided.

That check bounced. We dont feel thankful.

To other doulas,

The way insurance companies have treated doulas has devastated our ability to provide services. We’re closing so being bolder in our words feels comfortable to us.

Please don’t accept the bare minimum from these companies or it will never change. You deserve to be paid in a timely manner, without constant fight.

Dear Moda Health,

After waiting far too long for payment, we did finally receive one check this week.

Guess what? It was returned. It bounced.

For insufficient funds.

This is the type of issue that makes the work we love unsustainable. We’ve dealt with the many insurance issues quietly for months (years) now, but it’s past time to be louder.

Please don’t offer the services as a covered benefit to consumers when you aren’t willing to pay providers in a timely manner.

After more than a decade of serving families in our community, we have made the difficult decision to begin the process of closing PNW Doulas.

The changing insurance landscape has made it increasingly challenging to sustain the work we love. While heart and passion can overcome many obstacles, our hearts have carried a heavy weight since losing our business partner, Melissa. It has become clear that it is time to bring this chapter to a close.

We will continue to accept clients through the end of this year and are committed to ensuring every family receives the care they deserve. We will gladly refer new inquiries to colleagues we deeply respect.

Thank you for allowing us to walk beside you in some of life’s most profound moments. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve you.

While we were initially very excited to see insurance coverage happening for doula services in Oregon, the way that it has continued to play out over the years has led to doula work becoming increasingly unsustainable.

Insurances companies such as Moda Health, Providence Health Plan, and PacificSource Health Plans tell you that they will cover your doula care, but as doulas- we spend months fighting them to get paid after we serve your family.

Sustainability in this work is vital.

These companies must do better.

How are you supposed to have this baby when it can happen at any time AND there’s another child who needs you?!

Here’s how it could look for you:

Your doula arrives at 10 PM, checks in about your day, and jumps into action—tidying up, washing bottles, or helping with whatever tasks need to still be done. While you drift off to sleep, your doula focuses on baby’s comfort and care.

Need to nurse? We’ll wake you gently, support the feed, and let you fall right back to sleep. Those uninterrupted stretches of rest? They’re literal lifesavers, helping you recharge and feel like you again.

No, we don’t know how you’re doing it on this little sleep either. It’s some kind of super power given to new parents.

AND- If you need a full night of sleep, that’s something we specialize in. It looks like leaving the baby care to us while your brain, body, and eyeballs get some solid chunks of rest.
