Yes! Yes! Yes! We love swings!
Why do occupational therapists love swings?! Because there are so many benefits! Here are just a few reasons why...
➡️The swing, when used appropriately, can be a very calming and relaxing self-regulation tool. The repetitive motion and consistent movement in a similar pattern increases blood flow to the brain. This improves attention, focus, and helps create a state of relaxation.
➡️The motion of the swing also helps to strengthen the vestibular system. The vestibular system tells individuals where their body is in space. This helps facilitate improved body awareness and ability to process the world around you.
➡️The coordination and movement of swinging requires the use of the core, upper body, and lower body. It encourages bilateral integration through the use of both legs to pump the swing. It requires core strength to stay balanced on the swing. It strengthens the hand muscles as you hold on!
➡️Swinging is also a great way to stimulate brain development. It requires the use of many areas and parts of the brain to complete the activity. The brain rapid fires information to so many body parts and muscles about what to do and how to move. This is great for strengthening the brain and neural pathways.
