Study Maps Brain’s Ability to Comprehend Sound

Research identifies genes responsible for how the brain processes and perceives sound

By Erik Robinson, Oregon Health & Science University

New research from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and collaborating institutions reveals the complex orchestration of neurons in the brain that turns raw noise—the compression of airwaves and pressure on the inner ear—into the ability to, for instance, understand speech, enjoy music, and discern train whistles from car horns.

The study was published in the journal Nature Communications in January 2025.

“Our ability to understand the meaning of sounds depends on the ability of the brain to represent whether the sound is high- or low-pitched, loud or soft, near or far,” says Laurence Trussell, Ph.D., a professor of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery in the OHSU School of Medicine and scientist in OHSU’s Vollum Institute. “All of that requires very specialized neurocircuitry and highly specialized types of neurons in the brain.”

What are OTC hearing aids?

OTC hearing aids were implemented to help assist adults with a perceived mild-to-moderate degree of hearing loss and who may not need hearing assistance in every listening situation. An OTC hearing aid may help enhance speech and provide improvements in communication for people who are able to hear well generally but experience occasional difficulty hearing.

Devices traditionally known as hearing aids that are purchased through an audiologist are now labeled by the FDA as “prescription hearing aids.” OTC hearing aids have limited loudness output and features compared with prescription hearing aids. Both categories of devices share some of the same features, however the amount of customization, functions, and computer processing varies greatly between them. The variety, quality and functions of OTC hearing aids changes weekly as new OTC hearing aids enter the market.

PREVENTING EAR PRESSURE & PAIN

There are some steps you can take to reduce the chances that you’ll experience eustachian tube dysfunction.

Plan ahead if you know you will be in a situation that causes you ETD (eustachian tube dysfunction) or discomfort, like taking a decongestant before flying.

You can wear specialized ear plugs before you fly (such as EarPlanes), or just make a point of swallowing a lot when the plane descends. It also may help to stay awake during the descent and chew gum or try sucking on a hard candy.

You can also stay on top of allergy symptoms or treat chronic acid reflux or other factors that might be contributing to your ETD. Plus, stay hydrated—drinking lots of water will help keep your mucus thin.

Hearing aids and eyeglasses: Tips for a comfortable combo

If you’ve been wearing eyeglasses for years and just found out you also need hearing aids, you may be wondering what to expect, or if the combination of the two might be more trouble than its worth.

Discomfort should not be a problem as long as your hearing devices and frames are a good fit together, she said. And if there are any issues—poor audio quality, pressure on the ears, skin irritation—your hearing care provider can usually find a solution.

Grief and Hearing Loss
Do you find these common comments being said . . . .
* ‘My hearing is fine. Everyone is mumbling.’
* ‘I don’t want to use hearing aids.’
* ‘My hearing loss makes socializing difficult’

When you realize it is becoming difficult and exhausting to participate in daily conversations with friends and loved ones, depression sets in. It’s natural to feel sad and to avoid those situations where you might feel left out.

“People with hearing loss can easily feel isolated and alone”

“Withdrawing is common when communication gets too difficult.”

The final stage of grief is acceptance. You might realize that for years, you’ve relied on your partner or others to compensate for your hearing loss, and now it’s time for a change.

Elderspeak, hearing loss, and dementia

Talking down to elders because they can't hear properly can be damaging.

We’ve all heard adults speak to toddlers and young children in a sing-songy, oversimplified way. Maybe we’ve been the adults employing this method of communication with our own progeny. For many, it seems like the right thing to do. We might think: How can a baby, toddler, or young child understand the complexities of life without some amount of dumbing down? Interestingly, in more recent years, studies have been conducted about this same technique being used to talk to people as they age. The moniker given to this type of speech is “grayspeak” or “elderspeak.

The importance of hearing aids:

Let’s circle back to the importance of elders hearing properly. After researching studies that indicate a relationship between hearing loss and dementia in older adults, Frank Lin of Johns Hopkins University and his team conducted a revealing three-year study, published in The Lancet in 2023. In it, they tracked and compared the rate of cognitive decline between two groups of people: those who received hearing aids and those who didn’t.

What is swimmers ear?

Swimmer’s ear is the nickname for a bacterial infection of the skin of the ear canal, and it can be very painful. Also known as otitis externa, it affects millions of people every year, especially kids.

How it happens?

In simple terms, it is due to dirty water getting trapped in the ear canal, leading to an infection in the skin.

All water contains bacteria, even pools. However, bacteria is more abundant in lakes, rivers and oceans, especially when its warmer outside. When this bacteria-laden water doesn’t drain properly from the ear canal, it becomes trapped. In the warm, moist environment of the ear canal, the bacteria multiply and cause an infection.

The infection causes swelling and inflammation. Because the ear canal is small, the swelling and the resulting pain can be excruciating.

Note: Swimmer's ear is different than a middle ear infection, which is also common in kids, but usually develops after an upper respiratory infection and affects a different part of the ear

Key points:

Swimmer's ear, also known as otitis externa, is an infection of the ear canal related to moisture in the ear.

It causes ear fullness, severe ear pain, and sometimes discharge.

The infection will not go away on its own. Medical treatment with antibiotic ear drops and steroids is usually required.

Hearing aids and earbuds.

However, you don’t have to be a swimmer to get it. Sometimes just living in a hot and humid climate is enough for moisture to build up and become trapped, especially if you wear hearing aids or earbuds.
