“The underlying principle in the practice of chiropractic care is the existence of God, not in a religious sense, but in a strictly philosophical sense.
Chiropractors don’t talk about God, they use the term Universal Intelligence, not wanting to get into the subject of religion, which is a very personal one. Yet there is obviously an intelligence in all things, the human body being no exception. Few thinking people would argue that point. It’s not something that can be proved scientifically, but it is something that we know intuitively, the way we know that time and space are infinite. We cannot conceive of them in any other way.
The part of Universal Intelligence that resides in each of us is termed, in chiropractic philosophy, Innate Intelligence, innate being inborn. It is not the intelligence that we acquire with age or experience, but is perfect and complete at birth. It’s what runs our bodies every second of our lives, without our conscious thought. It’s what keeps us healthy, and heals us when we’re sick. It’s the part of God in man, whether you are religious, and think of God in a religious sense, or whether you’re not, and prefer to think of this intelligence as some sort of energy or Life Force.
This concept is extremely important in chiropractic practice. It is the underlying principle behind every chiropractic adjustment, and is the reason I became a chiropractor. Adjustments are performed for the specific purpose of removing interference to the normal flow of this Innate Intelligence, allowing normal communication with the physical body and the conscious mind. The result is physical and mental health, or normal function. The principle applies to all disease and all abnormalities. It does not replace traditional medical care, but is based on a new idea and new approach to the care of human health.
The body is designed to heal itself. When functioning normally, without any form of interference, it does so. The type of interference that chiropractors deal with is structural interference to the nervous system, a condition that essentially exists in everyone, to a greater or lesser degree. Rarely have I seen patients who exhibited no evidence of spinal cord or nerve root interference, and even in those cases, if symptoms of ill health were present, I suspect that I simply lacked the technical skill to locate the structural problem.
There are other primary causes of interference to the normal flow of this Innate Intelligence to the tissues and organs of the body. Certainly, other forms of health care may be indicated in these situations. Yet, even in these cases, reflex impulses back to the central nervous system will cause related areas of the spinal structure to “lock up,” so that a chiropractic examination may provide a hint of present or future internal problems even before they have begun to produce symptoms.
Dr. D.D. Palmer, founder of the chiropractic profession in 1895, was the first man in recorded history to assert that the spine is a mirror that can indicate a concealed disease inside the body. All modern research into nervous system function and control of the human body points to the accuracy and logic of this assertion. Dr. Palmer did not intend for his new profession to simply be a treatment for backaches. His was a completely new idea, an original thought, an approach to all human disease that emphasized the spine and central nervous system as mediators between the body’s built-in, self-healing, Innate Intelligence, and its physical and mental function.
My personal approach to health is always to look first to the spine when symptoms appear, whatever their nature, correct what I find, and allow the body to heal itself. Naturally, if a crisis situation exists, I do not hesitate to explore other options. However, even these cases do well to receive spinal adjustments to ensure that there exists no interference to the body’s ability to heal itself. We must at all times remember that the function of all doctors, whatever their specialties, is simply to remove impediments to this profound self-restoring ability. Healing comes from within. Let us build trust in our bodies and strengthen ourselves!”
