Wintertime can be a potentially dangerous time of year for many people with asthma.

On one hand, breathing in cold, dry air can trigger an asthma attack. On the other hand, staying inside with the heat on and widows shut can also expose you to more indoor allergens, irritants and respiratory viruses that can also trigger an asthma attack.

Here are tips on managing asthma in cold weather.

DYK: Most cervical cancers could be prevented by screening and vaccination.

January, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, is your reminder to get screened for cervical cancer.

When found early, cervical cancer is highly treatable and associated with long survival and good quality of life. That’s why screening tests and the HPV vaccine are so important.

For uninsured or underinsured individuals, cervical cancer screening is available free of cost through ScreenWise. Learn how to become a ScreenWise patient by calling (877) 255-7070 for assistance or visiting: https://ow.ly/nnrU50Y21Yq

A new measles case has been identified in Clackamas County, and OHA encourages people to make sure they are protected against measles.

The affected individual is unvaccinated. OHA and Clackamas County health officials have not yet determined whether the person has traveled outside of Oregon, or if the case is linked to other known cases including the two previously reported cases — both unvaccinated and with no known travel outside Oregon — previously confirmed by OHA and Linn County on Jan. 10

The good news is that two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine are 97% effective in preventing measles.

If you haven’t received the MMR vaccine or don’t know if you’ve received it, call a health care provider to learn more about getting vaccinated. Protect yourself and your family—get vaccinated.

“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane.” -Martin Luther King, Jr

Reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy and his fight against all forms of discrimination, including inequities in health care, we acknowledge the ongoing journey toward eliminating health inequities in Oregon by 2030. We appreciate the continuous work of communities and partners. Together, we remain committed to ensuring the health and well-being of all people in Oregon.
