Nexus Homecare LLC Salutes Henrietta Lacks' role in medical history. This Black History Month, visit the Henrietta Lacks statue and historical marker.
Lacks, born in Roanoke in 1920, produced cells that revolutionized medical research. Cells from a malignant tumor were taken from her body without informed consent during a hospital visit in 1951. Unlike other cancer cells researchers had studied, Lacks' regularly doubled and did not die. Known as immortal HeLa cells, her unique cells, which continue to be used in medical research, helped develop the polio vaccine and COVID-19 vaccines.
Her birthplace historical marker was unveiled in 2023 on 12th Street SW across from Emmanuel Tabernacle
Baptist Church, where her childhood home once stood.
In 2021, Roanoke City Council named Henrietta Lacks Plaza at 410 3rd St. SW in her honor and erected her bronze statue and an informational plaque there in 2023.
