šæ When the Path Turns Wild
Yesterday, I took Auntie Mom (96!) and my little service dog, Familiar, out to a nature reserve. I was limping along on a torn glute, hamstring, and labrum, determined to get her some fresh air and a change of scenery. We werenāt even sure weād make it to the observation platform.
Then, out of nowhere, a woman came charging down the path, screaming at me about āruining the environment.ā
In that moment, I had a choice: match her energy or stay rooted. I chose to breathe, stay calm, and ask, āWhat are you really upset about? Because whatās happening here is that Iām helping a 96-year-old enjoy nature, walking with my service animal, and trying to be gentle with my own body. So what exactly is so upsetting right now?ā
That pause shifted everything.
She wasnāt angry about us. She was in an anger tranceāher fury was about politics, underfunded parks, and seeing kids destroy fragile dunes and bird habitats with no intervention. She felt powerless, so she lashed out where she could.
I gently led her back to the present, pointing out the truth: a supervised service animal, a limping caretaker, and a 96-year-old woman werenāt causing harm. We started talking about nature, and I slipped into a ministerial moment.
I used Ericksonian hypnosis as we walked Auntie Mom back to the car, weaving a calming conversation about fireflies as signs of a healthy ecosystem. By the time we parted, she was lighter, calmer, and smiling.
Then she surprised me with a laugh and said,
āOhāI didnāt realize who you are, or what you do. Could I please have a business card?ā
⨠Lessons from the path:
Peopleās rage often isnāt about you.
Staying calm is more powerful than defending yourself.
You never know when youāre being called to minister or heal.
You can leave someone better than you found themāeven if they came at you screaming.
Iām proud of how I handled that moment. Instead of engaging the chaos, I became the calm in the storm.
