Special thanks to Portland musician Papi Fimbres for sharing his music with OSH patients this week.

"Music, for me is therapy. Music is my life. ... I'm using these instruments as a conduit and I'm trying to channel this positive energy we need in this world," Papi shared with OSH patients during his March 12 performance.

At OSH, music and music therapy help patients process and express their emotions and experiences. Events like the concert help connect them to positive community engagement -- with each other and visiting musicians who share their own stories of how music impacts their wellbeing. The concert series began last month with plans for an outdoor music series in the summer.

“Music is a powerful tool. It’s sharing a human experience with people and getting people to recognize the human experience of other people," said Jesse Studenberg, an OSH-Salem music therapist who helped organize Wednesday's event.

Here's a short clip from the performance.

One of the ways that OSH patients prepare to return to their community is by being in community.

Therapeutic small groups like “Good Medicine” create experiences for patients to learn and practice skills in the community that will benefit them when they discharge from the hospital.

The Good Medicine group recently volunteered at Oregon Garden to get beds used for demonstrations and educational programming ready for spring planting.

In the short video clip, Mike Patton, an OSH Native Services team member, shares the goals of the Good Medicine patient group.

🎵🎵OSH welcomed singer-songwriter Nick Jaina for special concerts on both hospital campuses this week.

The concert kicked off the return of a music series that was halted during the pandemic. The series connect patients to different music genres and community musicians. At OSH, music and music therapy are a bridge for many patients to engage in treatment and process and express their emotions and experiences, said Jesse Studenberg, an OSH-Salem music therapist who helped organize this week’s concerts.

Jaina said he hoped his music brings listeners comfort and inspiration.

"One thing I love about the arts is to be able to connect with people in one specific moment," he told the OSH community. "I love that the people in this room right now -- these exact people, this exact configuration -- will never be this way again, and it's a really special moment to connect through music. I feel really privileged to do this."

It's National Pharmacist Day!🎉

OSH pharmacists are directly involved in patient care on many different levels -- “behind the scenes” work in the pharmacy, collaboration with providers and directly meeting with patients to discuss their medications.

Thank you, pharmacists, for the passion, dedication and commitment you bring to the OSH community!

Thank you to Oregon’s First Lady Aimee Kotek-Wilson for joining OSH volunteers to prepare gifts to be delivered to patients next week. The OSH Volunteer Services’ Caring Tree program ensures each patient receives a gift, like a cozy sweatshirt, during the winter holidays.

After a whole lot of laughter was shared and spirits raised, we called it a “wrap” for the day!

We are grateful for all the donations and volunteers – like the First Lady – for sharing their time in support of OSH patients. Volunteer Services accepts donations year-round. We have exciting news to share! OSH has maintained its accreditation from The Joint Commission.

“TJC accreditation is an important indicator of the quality and safety of patient care a hospital provides," says Dr. Sara Walker, OSH interim superintendent and chief medical officer. "And because TJC also surveys our hospital for CMS conditions of participation, this renewal of our accreditation affirms what we already know: OSH staff are dedicated to providing a safe and therapeutic environment for the people we care for."
