Kids Who Count

Kids Who Count Kids Who Count is a nonprofit, Early Intervention program serving families in Ut EARLY INTERVENTION

Babies and toddlers grow and develop at different rates.

Early intervention can improve the outcomes for children who need a little extra help to keep their development on track. Early intervention services are authorized by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and are available in every state. As part of the Utah Department of Health Baby Watch Early Intervention program, our goal is to help your child grow and learn, and reach their potential. The Kids Who Count early intervention program serves children from birth to age three in the Nebo School District boundaries who have a delay in their development or a diagnosed disability. 🎃 Making Halloween Magical for Every Child 🎃

Halloween can be an exciting but overwhelming time for children with disabilities.

Here are some ways we can support our little ones:

✨ Practice makes comfortable - Use social stories and role-play to prepare for trick-or-treating, costumes, and doorbell ringing

🧩 Sensory-friendly choices - Consider costume comfort, offer alternatives to face paint, and bring noise-canceling headphones for sensitive ears

🗣️ Communication supports - Use picture cards, AAC devices, or simple scripts like "trick or treat" to help kids interact confidently

♿ Accessibility matters - Plan routes with wheelchair-friendly paths and homes with ramp access

🏡 Create alternatives - Host smaller gatherings, participate in trunk-or-treats, or celebrate at home if traditional trick-or-treating feels like too much

Early intervention specialists can work with families NOW to develop strategies that turn Halloween from stressful to successful. Every child deserves to experience the magic of the season in a way that works for them.

Does your child need support navigating Halloween or other social experiences?

Meet Aaron!💙

When Aaron was born underweight and struggled with eating, we didn't know where to turn. Finding Kids Who Count changed everything for our family.

Through their dedicated therapy services, Aaron has made incredible strides! He's now taking food orally – something we once only hoped for. But it's more than just the physical progress. Aaron has grown so much more confident around food, and that confidence lights up our whole family.

The biggest gift? We finally feel like we have a safety net. We're not navigating this alone anymore. With Kids Who Count's support, we're working toward our ultimate goal: getting Aaron off his feeding tube.

We're so grateful for the care, expertise, and hope they've given us. 💚

🎃 Planning a pumpkin patch playdate? You're giving your toddler more than just fall photo ops!

When little ones explore the patch together and pick pumpkins side-by-side, they're developing essential skills like empathy, communication, and problem-solving. Those "mine!" moments over the perfect pumpkin? They're actually healthy steps toward understanding boundaries and sharing.

Even if your toddler plays alongside rather than with their friends, they're still absorbing valuable social cues and building comfort with peers. Every interaction lays the foundation for future friendships!

Remember: messy, loud, and imperfect playdates are often the most successful ones!

What You'll Need:

Different pasta shapes (penne, bow ties, shells, rotini)
Muffin tin or small bowls
A big mixing bowl

Let's Play & Learn:

1️⃣ Sort It! Have your little one sort the pasta by shape into different sections.
2️⃣ Count It! Count how many of each shape you have.
3️⃣ Compare It! Which shape do you have the most of? The least?
4️⃣ Pattern It! Make fun patterns: shell, bow, shell, bow... what comes next?

Bonus: Use the pasta for sensory play, practice fine motor skills by picking up pieces with tongs, or glue them onto paper to make pasta art!

💡 This simple activity builds early math skills like counting, sorting, comparing quantities, and pattern recognition—all while having a blast!

What's your family's favorite pasta shape? Drop it in the comments! 👇

Here are some great books to help you explain indigenous people to your toddler. See if you can find them at the library.

“Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story” by Kevin Noble Maillard is a wonderful choice that combines a modern family story with elements of history and culture. The colorful illustrations and engaging narrative make it perfect for young children.

“We Are Water Protectors” by Carole Lindstrom, inspired by Indigenous-led movements, is another excellent book that teaches children about the importance of protecting our Earth and respecting Indigenous communities and their traditions.

“Sweetest Kulu” by Celina Kalluk is a beautiful bedtime poem that introduces young readers to Arctic wildlife and Inuit culture, filled with warmth and love.

Finally, “Jingle Dancer” by Cynthia Leitich Smith tells the story of a young Muscogee (Creek) girl who longs to dance at the next powwow, showcasing the importance of family, tradition, and community. These books offer a diverse and rich introduction to Indigenous cultures that your toddler will cherish.
