Elva Ruth (Canning) Schafer was born January 11, 1938, in Hale, Missouri, in her grandparents’ home. Her parents were John Ross and Charlotte Faye (Dinsmore) Canning. She passed away May 21, 2026, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, at the age of 88. On June 27, 1957, Elva was united in marriage to Robert Otto Schafer, Sr. and to this marriage three children were born. Elva lived in Salem, Missouri, from 1957 until 2012; in New Jersey from 2012 until 2019; and in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, from 2019 until 2026.

Elva graduated from high school in Springfield, Oregon, in 1955. She graduated from Southwest Baptist College in 1957 with an Associates of Arts degree; and, from Washington University in 1966 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Education. She also obtained a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Missouri. Elva had a long career in education, having taught in a one-room school, elementary school, and junior high school in Dent County, and the Salem school districts from 1960 until 1992. After retiring from teaching, she operated Schafer’s Furniture, along with her husband, until 2011.

Elva accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at a young age and her faith remained strong throughout her lifetime. At her passing, Elva was a member of Abundant Life Baptist Church in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Previously, she had been a member of Second Baptist Church in Salem, Missouri; Oak Grove Baptist Church in Salem, Missouri; and Salem Avenue Baptist Church in Rolla, Missouri. She also attended Valley View Chapel in Long Valley, New Jersey, while she lived there. She taught adult Sunday school classes at Oak Grove Baptist Church, helped with the AWANA children’s program at Salem Avenue Baptist Church, and volunteered with the Living History program at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla, Missouri.

Elva’s pride and joy was her family that included her three children: Robert Otto, Jr., Kelley Joann, and Steven John. She was a grandmother to six grandchildren: Andrea, Ashley, John, Brian, Joe, and Kyle; and eight great-grandchildren: Addison, Otto, Carter, June, Sutton, Thomas, Jack, and Cora, with one on the way. She loved her four siblings dearly: Alyce, Ross, Gene, and Glen. Elva and her husband enjoyed playing golf, building homes in the Salem area, and attending auctions where they collected a treasure trove of priceless? items. She also enjoyed quilting, painting, and playing bunco.

Preceding her in death were her grandparents, parents, husband, daughter and son-in-law (Kelley and Mike Shoemaker), brother (Gene Canning), her father-in-law and mother-in-law (Rev. Otto Ray Schafer and Lela Elizabeth (Ragsdale) Schafer), and her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law (Virginia and Bob Dale, Faye and Kip Drown).

She is survived by her oldest son and daughter-in-law (Robert, Jr. and Minnie Schafer) of Cuba, Missouri; youngest son and daughter-in-law (John and Suzie Schafer) of Loch Lloyd, Missouri; grandchildren Andrea Schumacher and husband Jon, Lee’s Summit, Missouri; Ashley Schafer and husband Kassidy Zhou, Edwardsville, Illinois; John Shoemaker and wife Casey, Alexandria, Virginia; Brian Schafer and wife Brianna, Denver, Colorado; Joe Shoemaker, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Kyle Schafer, Boulder, Colorado. Her surviving siblings include sister Alyce Frazier and husband Joe of Mansfield, Texas; brother Ross Canning and wife Vee of Port Angeles, Washington; sister-in-law Tenny Canning of Seattle, Washington; and brother Glen and wife Dotha of Corvallis, Oregon. At her passing, she was the great-grandmother to eight beautiful great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She will be deeply missed by those who have known her.

A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Elva will be held at the Abundant Life Baptist Church Administration Building, 414 SW Persels Road in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, on June 8, 2026, at 10:30a.m.

A Graveside Service will be held in Salem, Missouri, at the Cedar Grove Cemetery on June 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

Mary Ellen (Piatt) Ryffel Whittenburg passed away on May 14, 2026, in Mountain Grove, Missouri, at the age of sixty-seven years. She was born on October 20, 1958, in Salem, Missouri, to Howard Piatt and Carolyn (Comely) Brown. Mary grew up in Salem and spent her life devoted to her family, her work, and the people she loved.
Mary was blessed with four children: Charles, Joyce, Jeannie, and Maggie. She dearly loved her family and cherished time spent with them. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they brought her so much joy.

Mary dedicated many years of her life working as a Certified Nursing Assistant in several nursing homes throughout the area. She deeply loved caring for others and became a wonderful example to her daughters and granddaughters, helping guide them into the nursing profession as well. Her compassion, hard work, and devotion touched countless residents and families through the years.

Mary was united in love with Eugene Whittenburg after the two met in 2011 while working together at a nursing home. What began over a simple glass of tea grew into a treasured companionship filled with laughter, love, and treasured time spent together.

Mary enjoyed camping, fishing, and floating the rivers of Shannon and Dent Counties, especially at Montauk, Current River, and Sinkin Creek. Mary was happiest spending time outdoors and enjoying nature. She also loved her flowers and working in the yard.
Mary is survived by her husband: Eugene Whittenburg of Rockaway Beach, MO; son: Charles McCune and wife Mindy of Illinois; daughters: Joyce Wethy and husband Jacob of Salem, MO, Jeannie Cook and husband Les of Lynchburg, MO, and Maggie Stuber and husband Tony of Salem, MO; sisters: Beth Braden of Morea, IL, Debra Schaedel and husband Bob of Higbee, MO, and Betty Mayer and husband Tommy of Granite City, IL; brother: Charles Brown of Salem, MO; twenty grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

Preceding her in death were her father: Howard Piatt; mother: Carolyn (Comely) Brown; brother: Howard “Eugene” Piatt; and her grandson: Kory Bounds.

Those who knew Mary will remember her as ornery, full of s***k, colorful, and loving. Her strong spirit and caring heart left a lasting impression on everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. Mary’s love, laughter, and unforgettable spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Beverly Ann Wilson was born December 23, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri to Orben Esco and Ruth Virginia (Ellis) Roberts and passed away May 9, 2026, in Salem, Missouri, at the age of eighty-six years.

Beverly Roberts was united in marriage to Glen Edward Wilson on February 28, 1958, and to this marriage they were blessed with one son, Robert Edward (Eddie) Wilson.

She was saved at the age of nine years of age at the First Baptist Church in Salem. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and served as the organist at the church since 1966.

In 1972, she became a licensed Funeral Director and in 1989, the Wilson Family built and established the Wilson Mortuary of Salem, and later Viburnum until the sale of the business in 2018.

Beverly is survived by her son: Eddie Wilson and wife, Sherry, Salem; granddaughter: Kristy Giacomelli, Rolla; great-grandson: Wilson Giacomelli, Rolla; special friend: Ralph Shook, Steelville; her sweet dog: Gemma; and extended family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband: Glen Wilson; parents: Orben Esco and Ruth Virginia (Ellis) Roberts; her stepfather: Robert Carpenter; and stepbrother: Jim Carpenter.

She will be deeply missed by those who loved her most.

Theresa Ann (Crain) Berry, born December 5, 1961, in Rolla, Missouri, passed away May 7, 2026, in Columbia, Missouri, at the age of sixty-four years.

Theresa grew up in Turtle, Missouri, and graduated from Salem High School in 1980. On October 1, 1987, she married the love of her life, Eddie Dean Berry. Together they shared thirty-eight wonderful years of marriage and were blessed with two children, Denna and Justin, and four grandchildren, Calvin, Caiden, Simbrayven, and Koe, who were the center of her world.

Theresa spent most of her working years in the restaurant industry as a server and cook. She dedicated nineteen years to Westside Cafe in Lebanon, Missouri, where she became known for her hard work, warm smile, and friendly spirit.

Theresa loved music and could name just about any singing group or song she heard. She especially enjoyed watching television, with Hallmark Christmas movies and horror movies being among her favorites.

Above all her family, friends, and faith were most important to her. When she was able, she enjoyed the fellowship at Liberty Baptist Church.

Theresa is survived by her loving husband: Ed Berry of Rolla, MO; daughter: Denna Wolfe and husband Daniel of Fulton, MO; son: Justin Berry of Dixon, MO; grandchildren: Calvin, Caiden, Simbrayven, and Koe; sister: Jo Click of Turtle, MO; sister-in-law: Teresa Crain of Salem, MO; brother-in-law: D**k Malone of Salem, MO; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents: Johnnie and Geraldine (Morton) Crain; sister: Patsy Malone; and brother: Roger Crain.

Theresa had a goofy sense of humor, loved joking around, and never met a stranger. Her bright personality and kind heart could light up any room, and she made friends easily wherever she went. She will be deeply missed.
