New advisory board for sign language interpreters seeks applicants

The state of Oregon is recruiting seven people to serve on a new Board of Sign Language Interpreters. The board will determine qualifications for Oregon’s sign language license types such as educational, legal and medical, as well as advise on industry standards, technical expertise and a perspective on how policy changes affect the profession.

Each board member must be a resident of Oregon and proficient in American Sign Language (ASL). Five of the positions require an Oregon sign language interpreter license, which can be earned after applying.

The board will begin in January 2024 and will meet approximately three to four times a year (virtual attendance is possible). Individuals are appointed to four-year terms and may be entitled to compensation.

Hey there, interpreters - we've been warning for years that it was just a matter of time before the state put some teeth into the requirement that interpreters in healthcare settings must be "health care certified" or "health care qualified." Now there's a bill which has passed both houses of the legislature and is about to be signed by the governor. If you haven't done so already, we implore you to take care of your requirements. We know some really good interpreters who are going to be hungry for work if they don't get this done!
