As your midwives we commit to supporting physiologic birth.

This means creating opportunities and an environment that facilitates your body going through labor under its own power.

Hallmarks of physiologic birth include:
▫️Labor starting and progressing on its own.
▫️Supporting the birth process physically and emotionally in ways that promote effective labor.
▫️Labor that results in a vaginal birth with normal blood loss.
▫️You and your baby stay together after birth, with the baby remaining directly on your skin.
▫️Breastfeeding begins right away.

This week the midwives in our practice took a day to reflect on our year, our values, and our commitments to each other, our practice, and our patients.
Pausing in this way allowed us to call out each other’s strengths and build and plan for the year to come.

Name: Liz Krainchich

Memorable midwifery/work moment: I had a gynecological patient who had been dreading her annual exam because of negative past experiences. After the visit she told me that she felt safe and empowered and now sees annual exams as something positive and a time to engage in her health care.

Favorite free-time activity: reading (mostly fantasy), knitting, being outside in the sunshine, singing

What do you love about your job?
That I have the privilege to be part of such intimate, important moments in people’s lives. I also find it inspiring to witness the great strength that pregnant people and those receiving gynecological care have, as well as the capacity of their families/support networks

Our Centering group wrapped up with our final session and we also celebrated our student midwife’s Ireli’s last day. These mamas are ready to have their babies in the next month or two and Ireli just graduates from OHSU last Monday! Congrats to all these strong women!

Kate Mahar, CNM

Why am I a midwife?

I learned about midwifery during my first pregnancy. The care I received from my midwives changed my perspective on healthcare and empowered me to be the mother and person I am today. I hope I can do the same for my patients!
🌟
Languages spoken:
English and a little tiny bit of Italian. I took Latin for 3 years in high school!
🌟
Memorable midwifery moment:
I love it when family members are involved in the pregnancy and birth process- Dads helping catch the baby, sisters and grandmas to be providing support and sharing wisdom, older siblings asking the best questions. I have a whole bunch of kids right now trained to use the doppler in clinic so they can be part of their mom’s prenatal care when we listen to the baby.
🌟
Favorite fee time activity:
Spending time with my husband and 3 kids, watching and coaching kids soccer, trying my hand at bouldering, cooking, knitting, and spending time outside running, skiing, camping and hiking.
🌟

What do you love about your job?

I love following women and their families through their pregnancies and afterward. It’s so fun to see how they change and grow. I also love that my job keeps me on my toes- you never know what your day is going to be like and there are constantly new things to learn. I never feel bored at work!!

Yesterday the midwives began providing inpatient newborn care! This means that the same midwives who care for you through your whole pregnancy get to care for both you and your baby through your entire hospital stay.

We are so thrilled to welcome the first little snuggle monster who we get to care for in this way!
