Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area. Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash. If symptoms develop, call your health care provider or urgent care clinic before visiting to avoid exposing others.
Measles can be serious, especially for people who are not vaccinated, pregnant individuals, infants under 12 months, and those with weakened immune systems. If you believe you were exposed or develop symptoms, stay home and contact your health care provider. The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine remains the most effective protection against measles.
