Last month, we celebrated the achievements of 35 employees who participated in Salem Hospital’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. Students began the program in October 2024, and through virtual and in-person classes, were able to build confidence and fluency in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The classes, taught by Salem State University instructors, focused on the communication needs of the workplace, particularly around the roles of support staff employees, and everyday conversations.

During , we're proud to celebrate the incredible nurses at Salem Hospital. Jeff McCowan, RN-BC, clinical leader, Davenport 8, shares what makes him proud to be a nurse: “What makes me proud to be a nurse at [Mass General Brigham] is knowing that I’m part of a healthcare system that values meaningful, patient-centered care—something I deeply connect with after making a major career shift into nursing."

He goes on to say, "At [Mass General Brigham], I’ve found a place where that purpose is not only supported but shared across teams. I’m proud to work alongside compassionate, skilled professionals who are committed to innovation, excellence, and improving outcomes for our patients every day. Being part of this mission reminds me daily that I made the right choice—and it fills me with pride."

“I experienced severe chest pains recently. My wife and I called 911. From the prompt response of the EMTs, to the person who wheeled me to the lobby on the date of my release, everyone was exceptional... There is no doubt that the response team saved my life... Each and every doctor, nurse and attendant that I met was competent, helpful and friendly. I could not ask for more. Thank you all.”

After four decades of dedication to Salem Hospital, Janet Talbot, manager of Volunteer Services and the Salem Hospital Gift Shop, has officially retired.

Throughout her time with us, Janet created impactful programs that touched the lives of countless patients, staff and volunteers. From launching the Pet Therapy Dog Program to the Baby Cuddler Program, her contributions have left a lasting legacy.

Most recently, in July 2023, Janet led the successful opening of the new Salem Gift Shop, transforming it into a thriving space that exceeded revenue projections.
