I started this business to:
A. Help support my family and avoid depending on disability and food stamps. (I am still very disabled but I find ways to work that fits for me. Teaching is a top opportunity for me to succeed with my specific limitations).
B. Help people learn to save lives and to help people meet career requirements to stay employed and employable.
I love teaching and what I teach! I love my students!
In a time when everyone is struggling, this feels awful to request help.
This has been the hardest 3 months I've had in years!
I'm on the verge of losing my business, home, car, and maybe my job, everything!
I put off surgery for my shoulder over a year. I finally agree knowing I had short term disability but unknown to me, my insurance I pay for can't follow through because laws change a couple weeks before my leave.
I applied for paid Oregon medical leave way late because I never knew it existed. Apparently my job was supposed to inform me of the steps to follow, but they didn't. I requested medical leave for October back in March.
I have had no pay for a couple months. Started back to work a month before my doctor wanted me back due to some complications. But i won't get pay until maybe February or March due to back pay to cover insurance, taxes... so much!
PLUS while too sick to function after my surgery (from the surgery, catching a horrible virus and then depression), I missed my paperwork deadline by 1 day to get my AHA Instructor recertification and cannot teach official American Heart Association courses until the final paperwork goes through sometime in January.
We live barely making it between me working and running my business (working about 70 or more hours a week).
We cannot survive on my income alone from work. I need this small income I get from teaching. Most of what I receive from tuition goes to overhead, student cards, taxes... but I earn enough to cover my car and phone payment from this.
Teaching CPR and helping people meet their goals is not only great for them and those they serve, it gives me joy and purpose and is my passion.
I'm behind $3300 from the pandemic, and need at least $1500 to keep my business space through February. I just renewed my lease Oct 1st.
Plus, I need at least $3000 to cover my personal expenses (rent, car, insurance, phone).
I have received a check for $174 (was $1400 before deductions! WTF) for short term disability insurance. How does that help! Was supposed to be 60% of my pay.
I have been isolating because I am overwhelmed and feeling frozen in fear and keep reworking ways to fix this. I am constantly making calls, sending emails and doing research to find help, but do far I'm coming up empty.
Solution, become transparent and vulnerable and see what else is possible.
What I can do:
As i am a a licensed training center I can still teach:
1 on 1 coaching
Individual or team consultating
-CPR-AED, FIRST AID and BLS courses issued certification based on AHA but not by AHA. For many, the provider name (like AHA), isn't relevant, it's the course content that's required.
-team building, team dynamics
-DEIB training
-gender responsiveness and Trauma informed care.
-tutoring to help people pass AHA courses
-Business basics
Workplace culture, leadership and development.
Workplace safety and
-many others

If I can sustain this unforseen hardship for at least 2 more months, I'm confident I can be back up in full swing.
