There are Heroes Among Us

Have you noticed that there are people in our community that quietly go about giving their time and/or their services to our community? These people do not do these projects for the recognition they could gain, but instead because they are kind, they see a need in our community and want to leave it better than they found it, or they go above and beyond what is expected of them in their job. These are the heroes among us: the Hometown Heroes. Salem Chiropractic Clinic would like to recognize these individuals for the good they are doing for our community.

To kick off this series, we would like to recognize Beth Skaff, director of the McCook County Food Pantry in Salem. Skaff has been in this pinnacle role since 2018, after a friend asked her to take the project on. Skaff always has a great attitude towards her work and loves to help when she can. “I do this to see the smile on people’s faces and to give them comfort in an uneasy situation," Skaff states. Volunteer Maggie Vanderlinde says, “Beth does so much behind the scenes that goes unrecognized. She really cares about the success of the food pantry as a whole. It is not just a job to her. She really cares about the community members that come to the pantry and is sure to connect them with other resources in our community if needed.”

The McCook County Food Pantry serves around 55-65 local families, which is no small feat. Skaff manages about 35-40 volunteers on a rotating basis to make the food pantry a success for our community.
