Student Volunteer Applications Now Open – Help Us Spread the Word

Do you know a student who is curious about healthcare or looking for a meaningful way to get involved?

Student volunteer applications at Salem Health are now open, and we would love your help in sharing this opportunity. High school and college students are welcome to apply.

This program gives students a chance to explore healthcare, build confidence, and make a real difference—whether they’re helping someone find their way, supporting care teams, or simply showing up with kindness.

Please note: Our application process has recently been updated. We encourage any previous student applicants to reapply if they are still interested.

Applications close May 15, and space is limited.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering. Sign up for a free, in-person information session to see if Salem Health is a good fit for you.

This month's shout out is VERY SPECIAL. Especially since she's been with us for so long and has greatly impacted the Volunteer Services Department. Earlene Naylor has completed 20 years at Salem Health, and we couldn't be prouder of all that she has done for us.

Earlene reflects on Salem Health's growth to meet the needs of the community over the last 20 years:

"There was no building A. That area had a multi-level parking lot, a flat lot and a small building for imaging... I have seen each department get better and better through the years. All are striving to match what patients need and ensure staff are working in the best conditions. The volunteer office has taken that approach as well. We were 'OK' 10 years ago, but we continue to strive to improve year after year."

👵👴 Happy National Senior Citizens Day! 🏥💙

Today, we celebrate the strength, wisdom, and compassion of our senior citizens — especially those who are part of our Salem Health volunteer family.

Our incredible 161 senior volunteers give their time with a warm smile, selflessly helping patients, visitors and staff. Our most mature senior volunteer is 93 years young, and we are grateful for their continued service.

💐 Whether it's offering comfort to others, sharing life stories, or simply spreading kindness in the halls, their impact is felt every day.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate and recognize the generations who’ve paved the way for us all.

🙏 Thank you for your lifelong contributions and the legacy you continue to build. You are truly valued.

August 1 to 7 is National Clown Week! Here's a message from our very own Dr. Fun E. Bone, a beloved member of Volunteer Services. He'll be doing his Clown Doctor Rounds on Aug. 1, 4 and 6 – read below!

National Clown Week was first proclaimed by the President and Congress in 1970 to be observed the first week in August (August 1-7) every year to "call public attention to the charitable activities of clowns and the wholesome entertainment they provide for all our citizens."

Societal perceptions of "clown" are diverse, varied, and in some instances negative, influenced by many of the images projected and portrayed in social media, the general media, politics, and the entertainment industry.

Real clowns like me are professional performing artists who use our skills and our unique comical personas to entertain, make people laugh, distract them from the stress and anxieties of their situations and everyday life, and reach out and bring audiences into moments of spontaneous play.

In the hospital setting, Dr. Fun E. Bone supports the healing process and helps patients deal with the stress of hospitalization by providing humor and laughter-filled distractions from the feelings of fear, anxiety, and sadness.

So to celebrate, Dr. Fun E. Bone will hold clown doctor rounds three days during Clown Week, Fri Aug 1, Mon Aug 4, and Wed Aug 6, dispensing extra red nose transplants, funnybone adjustments, bad jokes, and squeezebox tunes in PEDS, the ED, hallways, waiting rooms, and public areas around the hospital campus, and any other units and patient rooms extending an invite.

We are thrilled to announce that Salem Hospital has officially achieved its fourth Magnet® Designation by the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) — the highest and most prestigious recognition a health care organization can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient care. Even more extraordinary, we earned eight exemplars, highlighting areas where we exceeded expectations and set the standard for excellence.

To put this into perspective, only 10% of hospitals worldwide — just 624 in total — have achieved Magnet designation. Of those, a mere 2% have reached this milestone four times.

A fourth designation is incredibly rare. It’s a testament not just to one moment in time, but to years of sustained excellence, continuous improvement and a deep commitment to our mission. It is evidence of the strong culture of collaboration and innovation that lives throughout our organization where nurses and interprofessional teams are empowered, supported and truly valued.

To our team, thank you for all you do to make us a place of excellence, compassion and pride. This Magnet moment belongs to each and every one of you.
