This is why we ask moms to get the Tdap vaccine towards the end of pregnancy; it gives the baby mom's antibodies to help fight Whooping Cough until babies are old enough to get their first shot at 2 months.

We ask everyone else who will be around newborns to boost their Tdap to protect the baby because adults and teens are the reservoir for pertussis but the babies are the ones who get so, so sick.

The treatment for pertussis has to be started before we even suspect it because the beginning looks like every other cold. Except in the babies who get diagnosed in the first few days of pertussis because they're in the ICU.

Thanks to thepediatricianmom for a really nice explanation of the tylenol-autism announcement. What makes science valid is repetition, corroboration, and validation of the same outcomes across multiple large controlled studies. The frequency with which an article ends with 'more research is needed' can be maddening. Well-designed, large studies carry more weight than any meta-analysis or small study could, and there is almost never a single, independent cause for anything, especially something as complex as autism.

The amount of fear, guilt and work piled on parents over the last week for spurious claims is unconscionable.

I LOVE what I do, and pediatricians pretty much universally do too. Well, the parts where we actually get to take care of kids. And we’ll do the right thing for kids over getting paid for our work. We cover our costs giving vaccines, I sometimes go for weeks without writing a prescription, and when I do they’re almost always the same five generic medications. Big pharma doesn’t exactly love me, and I don’t talk to or get my info from reps.
