We asked Raven what volunteering means to her, and her words truly capture the heart of hospice care:

“I saw a need and I answered the call. Being a hospice volunteer has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. To sit with patients and support their families, offering peace, comfort, and companionship during such sacred moments is an honor I hold close to my heart. 💜

Our social workers bring comfort, guidance, and unwavering support to patients and their families during life’s most meaningful moments.

Today, we are honored to spotlight Krystal Irwin, MSW, and asked her, “Why do you love being a hospice social worker?”

Here is what she shared. ✨

I never thought working as a hospice social worker would be my “dream job” but here I am… living the dream! To put it simply, I find a lot of fulfillment and joy in helping people through challenges in their lives, and being a social worker allows me to do that.

Seeing people struggle can be difficult but being able to help families navigate through their hardships and grief is worth it all. There is something sacred about being able to bare witness to our patients and families strengths and resilience, to come alongside them as a helper and encourager providing resources, support, and reassurance, often while at one of the lowest points of their life. . .what an honor to be a part of that!

Social work is the profession that feeds my soul and I will always be proud to say it’s a part of my life story. And at the end of the day when I walk into my home and my children ask what mommy did for the day, I’m always proud to talk to about my profession and tell them how mommy got to help her patients and what I learned from them and their families with God’s guidance that day. - Krystal Irwin, MSW

The Philosophy of Seva

The word "Seva" is a Sanskrit word meaning service. However, it is more than just a simple desire to help others, "Seva” is actually composed of two words, “saha,” which means “with that,” and “eva,” which means “too.” Taken as a whole, the word “seva” means “together with” and describes the actions that seek collective uplifting through understanding the needs of others and are based on togetherness and integration. It is an expression of compassion for others and a genuine desire to help those around you.
