Listen, I know it's February, but with this Kansas weather presenting very Spring-like temps, I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone of the importance of UV protection for your eyes! The snow has all melted, but even in the presence of snow a good pair of sunglasses can protect your eyes from cumulative, long-term damage and photokeratitis (sunburn of the eyes). Polarized lenses offer protection from glare, they reduce eye strain, fatigue, and squinting, and most polarized lenses feature UVA/UVB protection as well. February is Low Vision Awareness Month. A low vision patient is someone with a permanent, reduced visual acuity (typically 20/70 or worse) or significant loss of peripheral vision. This impairment significantly impacts daily functioning, such as reading, cooking, or recognizing faces. While vision loss in these patients is permanent and cannot be corrected to normal (20/20) through standard glasses, contact lenses, medicine, or surgery, treatment options such as vision rehabilitation or optical devices like magnifiers can help with daily tasks.

Does your child squint, sit very close to the TV/hold their device close to their face, have difficulty seeing the board in a classroom setting, or complain of frequent headaches? These could all be signs that your child struggles to see things far away. Myopia is the term we use to describe nearsightedness; when distant objects are blurry, but near objects are clear. An eye exam is required to diagnose such issues and is important for the prevention of further progression. If you have concerns about your child's vision, give us a call to schedule an eye exam.
