Oh, the gray days of January. Don't let the gray determine your day! Here are some useful tips to help brighten the days ahead:
1. Use some special lighting each morning for your mood boost. Most recommended are Verilux or Northern Light Technologies. I have my Verilux on now as I post. Make sure to follow directions while using this lighting.
2. Accessorize with bright colors. Shoes, socks, purses, jackets, and other clothing items in bright colors add something extra to an already gray day. Don't blend into January or wait until Spring to bring our the fun colors!
3. Mix up the exercise/conditioning program. There are many great ways to exercise indoors that may not be a priority when it is nice out. Give some new thought to ways that can be added during cold months and enjoy the variations such as yoga, core strengthening videos, air climber, or even easy going walk at home videos.
4. Look for and attend special seasonal events and outings. Don't let the cold confine you to the couch!
5. Just because it is cold, don't overload on the comfort carbs! Most of us know the painful reality of pulling out Spring clothing that no longer fits after the holidays. Start your "fit for Spring" eating and exercise routine now in order to avoid the Spring weight loss count down to get into the shorts routine.
6. Check the cognitions! How we think about things greatly impacts how we feel about life. I love the thought of one more minute of light each day! Keep thoughts focused on each day's blessings!
7. Soak up the sun when possible! Whether that is a brisk walk over the lunch hour or an early morning stroll, get into the sunlight when it is available.
8. Plan a vacation months ahead to go somewhere warm when possible. This can be fun anytime of year, but especially when it is cold outside.
9. Complete indoor tasks that don't normally get done when it is nice outdoors. This can be especially rewarding when it is finished and no longer hoovering at the bottom of a long "to do" list. The closet, that corner of the basement or that pile of laundry that no one wears anymore won't be missed when tidied or gone!
Be creative and enjoy this season which shall soon pass!
