Spring is here, and that means yardwork season is in full swing. While it’s a great way to get outside and stay active, it’s also one of the most common times we see preventable aches and injuries.
Think about everything that comes with spring cleanup. Raking leaves, pulling weeds, mulching, lifting bags of soil, trimming hedges, pushing mowers, even planting flowers. These movements might seem simple, but repetitive strain, awkward positions, and improper lifting can quickly lead to issues with your lower back, shoulders, neck, and even your knees.
A few things to keep in mind while you’re getting your yard in shape:
✔ Bend at your hips and knees not your lower back. Keep your chest up and your back as neutral as possible.
✔ Keep objects close to your body when lifting (bags of mulch, pots, tools). The farther away it is, the more strain on your spine.
✔ Avoid twisting while lifting or carrying pivot your feet instead.
✔ Break up long sessions. Yardwork is a workout, whether you think of it that way or not.
✔ Switch sides often when raking or shoveling to avoid overuse on one side of the body.
Even when you do everything right, your body can still get tight, sore, or out of alignment. That’s where chiropractic care can help keeping your body moving the way it’s supposed to so you can stay active and pain-free.
Take care of your yard, but don’t forget to take care of yourself too.
