Smoking is more than a habit—it’s a major contributor to long-term chronic disease, and one you’ll find shows up in pain management more than you might expect. According to the American Cancer Society, the Great American Smoke-Out is a powerful reminder that quitting smoking at any stage improves health and reduces the risk of many diseases.
At Piedmont Interventional Pain Care, we see the connection between smoking and chronic pain in real time:
🚭 Research shows that smoking is a risk factor for developing chronic pain, because to***co use affects your body’s nerves and pain-sensing systems (nociceptors) and leads to greater pain sensitivity.
🚭 Smokers are more likely to experience pain, functional limitations, and higher use of pain medications (including opioids) compared to non-smokers.
🚭 Smoking also interferes with circulation, oxygenation, tissue healing, and increases inflammation — all things that complicate both injury recovery and management of persistent pain.
If you’re living with chronic pain or preparing for a treatment plan, quitting smoking is one of the critical steps you can take to support your pain relief and long-term health.

Try maintaining a steady bedtime, stretching before bed, and avoiding screens an hour before sleep. Small steps like these can help keep both your rest and your pain under control as we “fall back.”
