๐ฅCHRISTIANACARE ANNOUNCES CLOSURE OF UNION HOSPITAL BIRTH CENTER, IMPACTING DELAWARE AREA FAMILIES
More than a month after ChristianaCare Union Hospital announced it was reducing obstetric and pediatric service hours due to staffing shortages, the healthcare system has now confirmed it is permanently closing the hospitalโs Family Birth Center in Elkton, Maryland.
The closure is expected to impact families across both northeastern Maryland and nearby Delaware communities who have relied on Union Hospital for labor and delivery care for years.
ChristianaCare previously announced in April that Union Hospital could no longer maintain full-time labor and delivery coverage because of ongoing nationwide shortages involving OB/GYN and pediatric specialists. At the time, the hospital shifted to limited obstetric and pediatric coverage, operating full services only from Monday mornings through Wednesday nights.
Now, hospital officials say the birth center itself will officially shut down, forcing expecting mothers to seek labor and delivery services at other facilities, including Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware.
According to ChristianaCare, patients arriving at Union Hospital in emergency labor situations will still be evaluated and stabilized before transfer if possible. Officials also stated no patient in active labor would be turned away during emergency circumstances.
The announcement has sparked concern throughout the region, especially because Union Hospital has long served Delaware residents living near the Maryland state line. Many families in western and southern New Castle County have historically used the Elkton facility due to its proximity.
The closure also comes after Union Hospital invested in major renovations to the Family Birth Center in recent years, including upgraded maternity suites and expanded delivery rooms unveiled during a reopening project in 2024.
ChristianaCare says the decision was driven by continued staffing challenges and the inability to safely sustain around-the-clock maternity coverage.
