My Happy Place

I just returned from spending a month at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. Since 2006, when I did my month-long Yoga Teacher Training at Kripalu, I have considered Kripalu my spiritual home.

Being at Kripalu is always a wonderfully intense, transformative experience. Nestled in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts, this haven for rest and retreat is truly a magical place. The front desk probably gets tired of people walking in the door and proclaiming, “I’m home!” It’s that kind of space.

In teaching my first yoga class back at my home studio, one of my clients remarked, “Kripalu is your happy place!” My immediate reply was, “No, this is my happy place.”

Upon reflection, I am realizing that all of the spiritual exploration I’ve spent the past two decades on is coming to fruition. As many of us are prone to do, I’ve spent much of my life searching for more, better, faster, easier, whatever.

I am now discovering/remembering that wherever I am is my happy place. My happy place does not have a physical location - it has no striving associated with it. Where I am at this moment, is the space which brings me joy, pleasure and contentment. How lucky am I to realize this?!

Of course, since I am a Human Being, I will periodically forget this fact. And that’s ok, because my soul knows and reminds me. What’s more, I am learning to listen to the music of my soul.

Spring is a beautiful, tumultuous time. A brutiful time.

After a stretch of dormancy, something begins to stir.

And because we aren’t separate from nature—we are nature—that stirring lives in us, too.

This kind of renewal asks for energy.
A surge. A rising. A reorganization from within.

It can feel uplifting, hopeful, alive…
and at the very same time, disorienting. Even exhausting.

More sensation.
More movement.
More to feel.

This is the rhythm of growth.

And this is where the Pause becomes essential.

A moment to land.
To arrive.
To stay close enough to what’s happening
without getting carried too far, too fast.

The body doesn’t open through force.
It opens through safety. Through attunement.

Beneath it all, there is a quiet intelligence,
guiding us toward blooming in our own time. 💚

You may be noticing a lot of craziness in the world right now. You may also be noticing a lot of craziness in your own mind right now. I believe both of those phenomena are manifestations of the massive global change that our earth is experiencing in this moment.

The practice of meditation is learning how to be aware of thoughts, while not believing that "I am" those thoughts. For our busy human minds, this is a difficult task. Come practice with us this week to perhaps catch a glimpse of who you really are, the space behind the mind.
