Today marks one year since I decided I was going to give my self 90 days to pull off something I’ve never done and opened the doors of my primary care clinic. I didn’t know I could learn so much about the human body and myself. I’m grateful for the vision God gave me and the willingness to execute. I am also grateful for every one of my patients who choose me to care for them. I always do deep reflection whenever I’m in the process of building something or offering a service so I figured I’d share.

Here’s what went right:
I was able to spend as much time as I wanted with my patient. Being able to get a thorough history helped me to better manage and make the right plan for my patients. So much is found out when you ask questions. Five minute appointments will never allow you to do this. I’m happy I gave myself permission to go against what most healthcare facilities are doing now. I feel like I can truly care again.

What I didn’t expect:
I didn’t realize how equipped I was to pull this off. Every degree and every thing I learned was well worth it. From business to financial planning to ex*****on, I pulled on everything I learned and saved myself a lot of money in start up fees.

I didn’t expect to spend more time with my boys. Making my own schedule and saying when I’m not working is what I need in this stage of my life. I feel like I’m a present mom and able to be with my kids as much as I desire. I thought the opposite would be true starting a business so soon with children so young but no job can give me the flexibility I have right now and I’m never willing to give that up.

What I didn’t like:
Insurance companies and their ability to dictate what my patients need and what they won’t cover. It’s trash. I don’t know what else to say about that.

What I feel like:
I feel at peace and not overwhelmed. I’m genuinely excited to go to work. I Love what I do and I think my patients feel that.

What I need to work on:
I’m a natural introverted person but one on one you’d never know. I have to get out of my comfort zone with meeting more people/talking more. I enjoy my solitude but I know there’s more education I need to get out to the community I serve.

What I want to tell an aspiring business owner:

- [ ] Don’t wait until it’s perfect.
- [ ] Doing it scared is still doing it.
- [ ] Fail fast and don’t think you know everything because you don’t
- [ ] If someone has not done what you’ve done you can’t listen to “why they wouldn’t do what you’re doing”
- [ ] Set your boundaries and say no to everything that crosses them
- [ ] Don’t waste your time and don’t let anyone else. You don’t get it back
- [ ] Never work hard. Work effectively and with integrity. Hard work burns you out. Effective work gets things done

I put my patient Mr. Salvatore on the spot today! He came to me back in April with uncontrolled diabetes. After partnering with me and adhering to our plan, I’m happy to say he is well controlled, losing weight and living a much more vibrant and healthier life. It’s national diabetes awareness month and I want you to hear from real patients and what works for them!
