Since 1953, Hefner VAMC has been improving the health of the men and women who have so proudly served our nation. We consider it our privilege to serve your health care needs in any way we can. Primary and secondary inpatient health care are available to more than 287,000 veterans living in a 21-county area of the Central Piedmont Region of North Carolina. This includes the Charlotte area with over 100,000 veterans, and the Winston-Salem area with 65,000 veterans. In addition to our main facility in Salisbury, we offer services in three community-based outpatient clinics/health care centers. Inpatient services include acute medicine, cardiology, surgery, psychiatry and physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as sub-acute and extended care. Primary and specialized outpatient services are provided at the medical center complex and the outlying clinics. Services are also provided at the Veterans Outreach Centers Centers in Greensboro and Charlotte. Contractual extended care is provided through an extensive residential care treatment program and a community nursing home program.

Last week, Salisbury VA’s partnership with Project Healing Waters (PHW) Fly Fishing was featured by Queen City News showcasing PHW’s many benefits for Veterans in coordination with our Whole Health and Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) services.

PHW is a national nonprofit with chapters across the country that give Veterans the unique opportunity to participate in fly fishing skill-building classes, trips to local, regional, and national ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams to experience the sport at no cost to the Veteran.

Thank you, Queen City News & John Le - Queen City News for sharing this wonderful and important program!

In Memoriam: Salisbury VA would like to honor the life and service of U.S. Army Air Forces Veteran Mr. Lonnie Poole Sr., who passed away last spring.

Born January 4, 1924, in Montgomery County, North Carolina, Mr. Lonnie Poole served in World War II.

“I give God all the praise,” said Mr. Poole early last year. “I count it an honor to have served.”

Mr. Poole was a resident at our Carolina Pride Community Living Center, where he often passionately shared stories of his time in the military and his life as a preacher.

During World War II, Mr. Poole served with the 82nd Airborne Division. He served courageously throughout Europe, surviving artillery fire from Axis units and witnessing the horror of N**i concentration camps as the Allies campaigned towards Germany.

“I’ve had a wonderful life; I have a lot of good friends and loved ones,” said Mr. Poole early last year. “God bless you all, and God bless America!”

Thank you for your service, Mr. Poole. We have the watch.

Congratulations to Mrs. Holly Glen, RN, with Primary Care at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner Salisbury VA Medical Center, who recently earned the December 2025 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, provided by the DAISY Foundation!

On Tuesday, December 30, 2025, Elizabeth Stroup, Associate Director for Patient Care Services/Executive Nurse, and the DAISY committee presented the DAISY award to Holly Glen.

Holly’s full award write-up from a Veteran follows below.
---
I can't even begin to express how beautiful Mrs. Holly's heart and soul are; she wears it on her sleeve. She touches the lives of each patient and person she encounters. I know she has mine. I have always wanted to nominate her for the Daisy award, but I felt like I could never put into words how amazing she is. I do KNOW that she deserves it! She goes above and beyond the "duties" of a nurse. She exemplifies what I wish ALL nurses would be like.

Even with my extreme anxiety about medical care, Mrs. Holly's calm demeanor has always made me feel at ease. Her kind words and warm smile made me feel heard and cared for constantly. She took the time to relate to me and build the rapport needed for me to trust her. Believe me, that wasn't easy, but she was 100% professional and never gave up!

Over the 9 years Mrs. Holly has been my nurse, she has helped guide me through more than a dozen medical diagnoses. Not only is she dedicated and knowledgeable about every one of them, but she has also shown patience and understanding with each question I have had, and more than anything, she has shown love and kindness while helping me through EVERY emotion I have gone through.

Over the years, there was a time or so break when she left to get her RN, BSN. My heart was broken. But then one day I went in for an appointment, and I automatically felt the warmth in the atmosphere. She was back, and she had not forgotten a fact about me. She remembered everything I had ever told her, and she asked about it all. To me, that just shows how much she truly cares.

Sadly, Mrs. Holly is no longer my nurse. My doctor went part-time (well deserved), and she lost Holly during that transition. Which stinks because they couldn't have been a better team. Even though she is no longer my nurse, she has told me I can always reach out to her anytime I need her. I have requested to talk to her multiple times since then, and she has always called me within a few hours. Over the years, she has educated me (and my spouse) on all my diagnoses.

She has supported me through multiple mental health emergencies by getting me where I needed to be, while showing me love and the utmost respect. She has NEVER judged me. She has made time for me between appointments to show me how to bandage my wounds, even when I didn't have an appointment.

The support she shows me is unmatched, and I hope the words I'm using show that. I pray I didn't do her an injustice by missing so many things she has done for me. She deserves this award. I am SO blessed to have had her as my nurse for so many years. I can't thank her enough.
