The most important word you should try to remember in all of you therapy is “Yet”. When someone asks you, “can you make your bed?” Or whatever the task or goal you are working on, always remember to say, “I’m working on making my bed, but I cannot do it, Yet.” Everyone’s journey and recovery is different and recovery does not happen overnight. But whatever it is you cannot do, instead of just not trying, say I’m going to attempt this myself, and if I am not able to do it I am to ask for help, and as I am getting help I’m going to look at what parts of this process do I need to focus on to be able to do this on my own one day. When you are 7 years old and your mom or dad says you should learn to make your own bed when you get up in the morning and maybe you don’t want to but eventually you learn that it’s a good healthy habit and you found a way to make your bed and learned how to do it. As stroke survivors sometimes we have to be that 7 year old boy or girl and relearn how to do something that used to seem simple but now has become difficult. Anything and everything you do can be therapeutic. So ask for help, problem solve, what are basic everyday functions that you have trouble with. If you are helping or assisting a survivor give them ideas and feedback on what they can do to get back their independence. Let them attempt to problem solve if they are able to. And if you ask them if they are able to do something, and they say “I can’t do that,” be sure to add “yet” to the end of their sentence and go after achievable goals to help them continue their recovery and journey. You are not alone in this journey.
