Not all fats are created equal. Some fats help support heart and brain health, while others are best enjoyed in moderation. Understanding the difference can make everyday food choices easier. 🫒💜

Good fats are typically unsaturated fats. These fats can help support cholesterol levels, brain function, and overall heart health. You’ll often find them in foods like:
• Avocados
• Olive oil and canola oil
• Nuts and seeds
• Fatty fishlike salmon and tuna

Bad fats are usually saturated or trans fats. Eating too much of these fats may increase the risk of heart health concerns, so they are best limited when possible. Common sources include:
• Fried foods
• Processed snacks
• Baked goods made with shortening
• Fast food meals and processed meats

Choosing more good fats and limiting bad fats is one simple way to support healthy aging through nutrition.

In recognition of Brain Awareness Week, it’s a great time to highlight foods that support brain health at every age. 🧠💜

Here are a few brain-healthy foods to keep in mind:
• Fatty fish like salmon and tuna
• Leafy greens such as spinach and kale
• Berries, especially blueberries and strawberries
• Nuts and seeds like walnuts and flaxseed
• Whole grains that support steady energy
• Olive oil for healthy fats

Pairing balanced nutrition with other healthy habits can help support memory, focus, and overall brain wellness as we age.

✨ Senior Gems Training in Action ✨

We had a great group of caregivers join us this week for Senior Gems® training! This specialized program helps caregivers better understand and support individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The Senior Gems model teaches caregivers how to recognize different stages of dementia and adjust their approach to care based on each person’s abilities and needs. By focusing on strengths rather than limitations, caregivers can provide more compassionate, patient-centered support.

At Senior Helpers of Central North Carolina, ongoing training is an important part of ensuring our caregivers are equipped to provide the highest level of care to the families we serve. We’re proud of the caregivers who took the time to further their skills and knowledge this week!

💜 If your loved one is experiencing memory loss, our Senior Gems trained caregivers are here to help.

📞 Call us at 980-866-3188 to learn more or schedule a free in-home care assessment.

Eating well does not have to be expensive. 🥕💜

A few smart choices can help seniors and caregivers enjoy nutritious meals while sticking to a budget:

• Plan simple meals ahead of time to avoid food waste
• Choose store brands, frozen fruits, and frozen vegetables
• Cook once and enjoy leftovers for another meal
• Buy in-season produce when possible
• Use beans, lentils, and eggs as affordable protein options

Healthy eating can be practical, affordable, and supportive of healthy aging.

Here are a few easy lower sugar swaps to try at home:
🍎 Fresh fruit instead of sugary desserts
